3dsmax is HORRIBLE for your old fashion mesh editing but the nurbs are cool then again I am a noob to modeling but I hope I was somewhat informative.
For 3dsmax, thats the exact opposite. Nurbs in max are "horrible" but it has pretty good mesh (poly) editing cababilities.

Yea, the files are just 7z files renamaed to sd7. To open existing sd7 file, just rename it to 7z and unzip.

You asked why you are getting the "blue box/plane," and you are getting it because your SMD file defines it through the WaterPlaneColor tag. Thats good to know. Not to mention that is a completely different map Pretty much the same map, but i fail to see if that even matters in this case....

Yea its the smallest map size. 1024x1024 texture map and height (etc) are 129x129. I made it small to speed up the compiling since im only learning and experimenting stuff, so small is good... for now. :) Note that the bright blue are is separate from all the rest, its not part of the water plane or...
