avoid breaking backward compatibility. for example, they can add an option do disable the builtin behavior, then you can use a gadget or unit scripts to spawn the desired CEGS. |

I'm pretty sure infantry corpses in S44 don't emit smoke. so it's possible to disable it, not sure how though. |

https://springrts.com/wiki/Gamedev:FeatureDefs#Visual has smoketime which allows you to remove the default effect. you can then emit whatever effects you want with lua. |
