Summary0004466: Underwater unit's icon is drawn behind water.
DescriptionIts understandable that unit's model is drawn behind water surface, but for strategic icons player expect to be able to see them always.

Also, icon shrink when zoomed out. This sound less strategic because you can't see them from far away.
Steps To ReproduceWith water setting at basic,
you will see that the icon became grey-ed out/darken when underwater.

Also, if you zoom out, the icon no longer appear as same size. Now it will shrink too like the unit's model.

Icons have been drawn under water since 95.0 and i think this is better than before. The icon is drawn in the correct position, is clearly visible also under water and it gives the player info about the unit.
A possible change could be to don't let icon drawing be affected by world, i.e. draw them last and skip depth test, i think it is fine as it is though.
In 91.0 when icons were always drawn above water it could be tricky to select the unit with a low UnitIconDist and a tilted view.

I don't think the zooming have been changed since 91.0, they get slightly smaller when zoomed out.

ops sorry, I word it wrongly.

I agree, the problem is that Icon shouldn't be effected by the world (I was confused because I saw the Icon behind water and thought that was the problem).

I noticed that cursor issue with drawing too, it draw on water while cursor are pointing underwater. I think cursor must be
- on surface when drawing and
- underwater while selecting, and
- at surface for point-attack, and
- underwater for area/volume-attack.

IE, the cursor should be smart/contextual.

Because, if you play as ships in 97 you can't shoot at water surface, and if you play as underwater unit in 91 you can't shoot sea bed.

IMO this stuff doesn't seem to have been fully thought off, so IMO its better to just use old ways (until everything is figured out).

What game even had a 3D cursor?

xponen,
You switched subject there in your last comment.
I will close this soon if nothing good related to Summary is posted.

I think he doesn't care where the icon is drawn. Just that they are obscured by water so are harder to see.

thats why 0002300 is a duplicate, fog obscures icons, too.

it's no duplicate, if at all it is `related to`
