Summary0002230: Entering alternate view mode (F4, F2) causes hang and very poor performance
DescriptionWhen entering an alternate view mode by pressing F2, F4 or trying to build a mex (which makes the game to enter the 'F4' view mode to see metal texture) causes a hang.

After a short while the hang detection routine kicks in and the wanted view mode is toggled on, but the performance is very poor. Going back to normal game mode makes the game run smootly again.

I can reproduce the problem every time and I could also run a version of spring.exe with debug symbols on to get a better stack trace.

GeForce 9800 GTX, Latests drivers (260.99_desktop_winxp_32bit_international_whql.exe), Windows XP with all latests updates.

translated via http://spring.abma.de/translate/index.php

I don't understand "translated with links to github source ('master' detected)" - the line numbers look like 0.82.6.1, not master

The build is from 0.82.6.1 (downloaded from the website yesterday). I think I'm able to compile spring on my computer so I can aid on debugging this issue, but I'd be happy if I could have some good pointers what I could try - gfx programming isn't my core skill.

hangs are often triggered by gfx-drivers... does this happen on every map/different mods?

do you have some custom widgets installed?

Video mode set to 1850x1100/32bit (windowed)
[ 0] SDL: 1.2.10
[ 0] GL: 3.3.0
[ 0] GL: NVIDIA Corporation
[ 0] GL: GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
[ 0] GLSL: 3.30 NVIDIA via Cg compiler
[ 0] GLEW: 1.5.4

i am 95% certain it is your GFX driver(/card), not spring.
try older drivers, especially ones that were new when your GFX card was the latest and greatest.

I tried to downgrade display drivers way back to 190.62 without any help. Turning debug mode on by pressing Alt-B shows that ExtraTexture takes 60-80% of time when I turn F2 or F4 display mode on. What does that mean?

I also tried to toggle widgets on and off without success. I hear that there's some profiler widget for lua widgets which I'll try next.

does this happen with different maps/mods too?

So far I have tried only BA 7.19 but multiple maps. I'll try some other mod also.

I just tried to use the Lua Profiler from http://www.springfiles.com/show_file.php?id=962 and that confirmed that no LUA widget is using that much cpu - the individual widget cpu usages doesn't change when I go into F2 or F4.

It's also worth to say that I have been playing spring for a long time in this machine without any problems, I believe that some spring engine upgrade has triggered this bug, but I can't point any specific version because it has been a while since I last played - the last version was spring_0.81.2.exe and I believe that version did not suffer from this problem.

did you try to lower graphic settings? (just to test if the hang still occurs)

I tried also a few other mods with same results. However:

I've pinpointed that checking "Use Pixelbuffer objects" setting triggers the bug. Disabling it will make both F2 and F4 modes work fine. I also tried toggling shadows, water quality and LuaShaders on/off from the settings and none of those had any effect on the problem. Only disabling PixelBuffer objects helped.

That said, I can now play spring again without problems, but it's strange, because my GPU and drivers should support PixelBuffer objects as far as I know.

GFX drivers/cards often claim to be able to do stuff and then cant, or there are uknonw bugs with the driver/card combo, or the bug only triggers if the card is in a certain state, ...
not our fault, and nothing we can do there.
