| Summary | 0002023: Spring default font looks blurry on high resolution monitors | ||||
| Description | The test for the loading screen looks blurry. This has been an issue for a long time. The same applies for text on the command menu buttons. Basically for anything above 14pt (e.g. widgets using default spring font). | ||||

a shame that such stuff can not be seen on screen-shots ... |

Print screen works I think. I agree that the fonts are a bit too low-res for the large PrintLoadMsg text. |
Print Screen just records a blank black screen for me when I try to use it in spring. I would do it windowed, but if I do that, then I've already defeated the purpose (because the font isn't as stretched due to smaller resolution). |
if you want to tell me that the few pixels the canvas has less in a maximized window then in full-screen (2000x1500 instead of 2005x1530) make the font non-blurry... just NO! |
(because the font isn't as stretched due to smaller resolution). If I want to show how bad something is, I'd like to show it in all of it's horrible glory. |

won't fix whole loadingscreen stage will be modularized soon and moved into lua land. |
It's not Just the loading screen JK (the loading screen is just where it is the most obvious), it's the entire engine. Anything you do with the default fonts on high resolution monitors looks totally crappy. This qualifies as a bug, and it should be at least somewhat easy to fix. |
doesn't matter The rest is already lua-fied, engine GUI is deprecated and won't be improved anymore. Also it is not a bug, it is a VRAM decision. |
In that case I suggest that you remove engine side fonts completely, forcing widget/gadget developers to use better fonts in the first place, because as it is, Many widgets and gadgets use the spring default fonts and it just makes things worst. Also, you say tom?to, I say tom?to. Edit: Oh weak. Mantis doesn't support unicode? |
lol zwszg and the others would kill me when removing gl.Text I can't do more than saying that there is gl.LoadFont & gl.DeleteFont ... |
Well you're trying to force this issue into the widget/gadget creators courts anyway. If you're gonna force widget/gadget authors to fix it so that you don't have to, then do it! Otherwise, fix the underlying issue. Don't act like this hasn't been a cause of common complaint for years. |
I don't force anyone ... I am just interested in clean and maintainable code. I won't remove anything just to force others to update their code ... |

I don't understand how simply changing the default font a bit results in unclean code, and I think you'd have a little trouble backing that one up, but, whatever, it's fairly obvious that I'm not going to win this argument. I hope that the start screens have been luaized by the new version release, so at least we can fix it ourselves. Speaking of, you mention the default gui. If it's not going to be maintained, imo you'd be better off removing it entirely (maybe replace it with a functional lua replacement?). I'd venture that lolui or redui are simply configurable lua replacements of the default gui and would work nicely as user side lua widgets. It's better than some poor saps (like the conflict terra guys) trying to figure out ctrlpanel.txt (which is an utter disaster). Regardless, that is offtopic, and I consider this current issue to be closed (assuming you're wanting to close it so it gets off of the annoying "giant red bar" list). |
