So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
Is there an installer or should I download spring and join a Kernel Panic room or what?
Re: So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
The temptation, to do linux joke.. sooo strong.. must resist... for... installer is on the Downloadpages Link to Gamepages.
It should be autoupdating.
There see, i can be serious, i can be helpfull.

Code: Select all
echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger

Re: So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
Tried that. The installer comes with Spring 95 instead of 98, and the unzip method plays very badly on modern Windows with UAC. But then, SpringLobby itself has trouble with UAC - after an uninstall/reinstall I've found that SpringLobby can no longer update itself. I wanted to get some friends together to play KP... probably best just to build myself a portable zip I can send around to them.
Re: So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
Maybe it comes with a Spring 95 because the developer made sure it works with it unlike 98 which may have issues.
In general it's preferable that the game dev rahther than the player makes the decision on which engine version to use.

Re: So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
With 98 there are few issues, though nothing too major as long as you don't play with ONS or Touhou. 95 works a bit better.
Re: So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
Yeah, but SpringLobby complains about 95 and demands you update to 98, and does ZK support mainserver anymore? I haven't tried using ZKL to run non-ZK games anymore.
Re: So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
ZKL isn't compatible with the main server anymore.
Re: So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
1) Join the Kernel Panic autohost from the list of rooms.
Files will be automatically downloaded and correct engine version, as set by host, will be used.
=> There are no Kernel Panic autohosts anymore.
2) Use a relayhost.
With springlobby you can select engine version from dropdown menu.
Files are easily installed by unzipping
http://springfiles.com/spring/game-inst ... -panic-zip
=> There are no working relayhosts anymore.
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=33235&hilit=relay
3) Use a lobby that can host directly. (for ex: springlobby)
=> Maybe the best way, if you can forward the ports in router. (port 8452?)
4) Run your own lobby server, for playing on a Lan: https://springrts.com/wiki/Lan
You can choose between:
4.1) https://springrts.com/wiki/Uberserver which is "recommonded" but "currently doesn't work on windows/osx" Or maybe it now does? https://github.com/spring/uberserver/issues/70
or
4.2) SpringLS "(unmaintained, broken with some newer lobby clients)"
5)North Korea zero-K's lobby & server.
It has option to host some non-zK mods. Since recently https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K-Inf ... e/pull/617 that seems to work for Kernel Panic.
=> I did not manage to start a game:
-Lobby said I "missing files", even if it had just downloaded them.
-Eventually everything stopped working (all hosts disappeared) and people in chat wrote "i hope the servers didn't shit on themselves" and "looks like springie accidentally", so I left.
Even if it should start, details make it player-unfriendly or maybe unplayable:
-It hosted engine testversion spring98.01-451 which might not work for KP?
No idea how to change that, maybe textcommands.
-No color-selection.
-In the mapselection of zK KernelPanic maps are downvoted and marked as "not supported": It is not possible to nicely browse for them. This seems to be accepted solution. https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K-Inf ... t-68026625
If you know mapnames from memory you can probally pick maps.
-Not possible to switch from "startboxes" to "fixed startpos"
-No mapoptions.
-No replays for non-zK mods.
-...
6) Try to figure out what commands to send to various autohosts, to make them "spawn" a room.
=> I do not see suitable host in playerlist to try that.
7) Try other lobbies like http://weblobby.springrts.com/ : maybe they have menu to make (6) easier.
Play Techa
=> Morph Eco Commander

Re: So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
Decided to take another crack at this, see if I can get it running in ZK Lobby.
Good news is I don't see any errors.
Bad news is it seems like ZKLobby fails to parse Kernel Panic's modoptions somehow - Springie garbles them when listing them out, and ZKLobby's modoptions GUI is blank.
The net effect is it doesn't set any, and this, I think, triggers the game selector window even when trying to play vs bots.
Is the KP source anywhere I can look at it? I want to see which modoption is used to control the game selector window?

Re: So what's the current best way to get Kernel Panic?
Sorry playing KP proves to be so difficult. There's no SVN, GitHub, or the like, just unzip the sd7 to get sources.
