Possible solution to spring woes : Ubuntufy it!

Post by KaiserJ »

so yeah, maybe you saw my thread in help and bugs, maybe you haven't... basically i have a brand new vista machine that ran spring 100% better than my old and aged computer on version 0.78.

however, when 0.79, i found myself unable to start most games and mods (THIS and colorwars, they worked, nothing else)

and i was quite pissed off, seeing as i had spent a fair chunk of change on the comp, one of the reasons being primarily that my old comp failed in the endgame stages of epic battles...

back on topic... it was suggested to me by a friend that i try ubuntu, even before i had ever heard of spring. of course, not being a middle aged balding man with a ponytail, beergut and star trek paraphernalia proudly displayed on my desk, i was resistant to anything to do with linux "wat! its like DOS, but HARDURRR"

anyhow. downloaded the iso file, was able to test out the OS from the cd before booting; was impressed by the loading speed and some of the other aspects, so i decided to give it a shot.

used disk management in vista to create a partition, installed ubuntu onto it. installing spring was a snap; open up the package manager, search for spring, download everything related. spring installs itself; i didn't see anything like a spring related progress bar, just ubuntu showing me it was getting 'er done.

installing mods? maps? shit downloads to the desktop, then you double click it, and it mysteriously files itself into where it should be.

install a driver? same deal... ubuntu does it all, while giving you a handjob.

TL;DR Ubuntu is epic win, if you are having trouble getting new versions of spring to run on your computer (especially a vista one) then try installing ubuntu; you can always remove it later if you hate it. peeps like jazcash and some others who've been having trouble, i STRONGLY suggest you give it a shot.

The Intel chipset driver on Ubuntu doesn't measure up to the Windows one, so if you're like me and haven't bought a real videocard yet, Ubuntu is no-go for modern games like Spring.

Well actually there was a really long thread in off topic from when I gave Ubuntu a serious go. Unfortunately, with all the various things I do, running a *nix desktop doesn't suit my needs unfortunately. Also, I had a hell of a time setting up the sound and getting my nvidia drivers working properly.

I do agree tho. Ubuntu is unmitigated fukwin with some butter on the side.
