For those of you following Borderlands

Post by SwiftSpear »

Some interesting news recently

http://borderlandsguide.com/

I have mixed feelings, but at the end of the day, I played and liked dwarf fortress, so I don't see graphics really destroying the gameplay experience for me if the gameplay and story are solid.

Hmm never heard of it...sounds cool...
IMO randomness is and should be the future of RPG games...
I dont care much about GFX when it passes a certain point...As long as it looks okaish (works on max on an average system).
Of course if the gameplay is superb i don't care about it at all.
But superb gameplay is so very rare..

I'm rather speechless this made it through for the investor. I mean saying hey - we're going to change the entire graphics style at such a late point is ... well it's like 50% of your work is garbage now. They must have exceptional skills at convincing the investor...

Well, rewriting the shader isn't actually all that hard to do, and so much of the game is procedurally generated... I kind of think the art team was bored not getting to do all the things they'd normally do, so they got obsessive into little "this doesn't look quite perfect" things and ended up creating a bunch of work for them selfs by ultimately deciding it needed a big change up.

They've shown off some models that have been retweeked to look a little more stylish, and the new shader, but alot of the stuff is going to be the same content it was before I'm guessing. They probably pumped up the contrast on the gun textures, but I doubt they changed any of them much.

You can't just throw a shader at something you have and get a result as shown on that picture. If you want to go from realistic to comic style you pretty much have to redo all the textures as with just a shader you won't get such an amazing result...

And where is your basis for that statement? Redo normals, maybe, redo all textures? I doubt it.

Hmm it'll be different thats for sure. And i like that.

But im not sure how good it will be at immersing the player into the atmosphere.

Ive already completed the game

its OK, but pretty dull. the combat isnt very satisying, theres very little to the game- very streamlined, not alot happening- very few characters and the enemies are all the same. the vehicular combat is arcade and boring, the character selection and skill trees are extremely simple and have next to no effect on gameplay, the best guns are the ones you get at the end of quests which means no matter how you play through the game every player will have the same guns... I mean, I could go on, and the coop play makes the game more fun than it wouldve been, but this is nothing to get excited about.
