Attacks on new players
Just thought Id add my 2cents worth.
I read the previous thread on this topic and thought you might like to hear from a 'noob' it is what i am often called during most games and not in any friendly kind of manner.
I happen to think this game is the BEST RTS game ever and the Spring crowd have excelled in taking it to the next level.
One of the reasons this is such a great game (SpringTA) is that this game has been under constant development (still is) By Gamers for Gamers.
The fact that it is open source makes it unique and we probably wont ever have a game like it EVER. Since software houses are unlikely to ever let this happen again.
BUT regards the community which is the real heart and soul of the game that has a real possibilty of dying. It is upto people who care about this community to guard it, ang guard it with a passion.
The only way it will survive is if new people "noobs" if you prefer are given "special" treatment that is ...
Dont flame them just because they weakened your side and you
because you wernt good enough.
The game is autobalanced at start but not perfect since many players smurf it.
If you recognise that a low ranked player is new then offer advice NOT abuse.
DONT forget He may not take your advice
When I first started playing I was to busy trying to figure out what i was doing with my units and missed many comments posted to me in game!!
Also the new player may just not be able to follow your advice because of lack of knowledge of UI.
AGAIN if you recognise that the new player is a "noob" it is up to YOU and the rest of the better players to cover his ass.
Remember in theory the other side has a noob or two
If you play two sides then you are on a team the side which acts as a team has a greater chance of winning, so protect your noob you will probably spread quicker than him and so gain the metal down the field.
And definitely DONT Comnap to "teach him a lesson"
This will not teach him any good lesson apart from...
'I wont be playing this game again anytime soon'
Also there are already many ways to keep out people from your game
Dont use those features to block out newbies
Again if a newbie does come along but cant get a game because everyone is expelling him guess what he will go away and wont come back = community is dying
We all need to learn and it has already been mentioned this game does have a tough learning curve.
PLUS newbies do add a kind of random element to a game that enriches it.
I will say it again better players ought to be able to compensate and protect weaker elements on the team.
A good player is able to adapt to take off his blinkers and lay down a game plan if it means he is going to loose a flank.
This game is the best thing that happened to RTS some of you are taking it for granted and if you continue YOU WILL BE SORRY
this scenario will not happen again there wont be another "SPRINGTA"

Agreed for the most part.
Given the choice I would rather play games without newb players than with newb players, but simply put, it's something that neither can nor should be avoided. I'd rather eat entirely candy and junkfood too, however, reality doesn't grant me the option of staying healthy if I were to do that. Some things just need to be.
Also... Comm napping your allies is still considered harassing other springers and still bannable. In general, "teaching" your allies "a lesson" is a really really bad idea if you enjoy not spending long periods of time unable to play the game.

Worms Armageddon is exactly like that but worse, or not, depends on your point of view.
If you make one mistake in game, then two things may happen instantaneously:
a. Everyone quits or the host himself quits
b. Everyone teams up to kill you
And oh yeahs, the guy who got his hands on the source code to provide third party patches is constantly flammed by bla blablabla.

I did refuse some games against new players but that was mostly because I was tired of having to explain the basics to everyone, sometimes I just want a good match and that's not gonna happen with someone who just started, it would be better for them to play with other beginners regularly until they have a grip on the basics, it's not easy to learn when you're fighting a better player but it's much easier to see the game play out when you're in control of the situation.
Set the rank limit, that usually helps. This is a tricky problem though. I was once an uber noob, and I still am mostly a noob. I enjoy playing with people who are very good at the game, and sometimes people who dont know what they are doing get on my nerves. I enjoy teaching people and helping people, but I have enough trouble as it is managing my own game. However, as a noob myself, i still want to play with the best people too. Generally, the best thing to do is to start a 1v1 match with a beginner, and give advice, while building up a collossal army. Once they have learned alot (they will if you do it right), you get the added satisfaction of squashing them when its all over. This has been done to me, and I have done it to others, and it works. I'd say about 1 out of 2 of my games is a one on one match (short and sweet) with a noob to teach them stuff.
wow, nice of you to help the guy.*sarcasm*Baladin wrote:I remember this really bad noob on GF who tried to tech from the start, so i just trailed behind his cons with commander and captured each windmill he made. Poor bugger didnt even realise
I am all for helping noobs but the best I can do is say "NO NO DON'T TEK 2 L3!" then watch them lose and hope it sinks in.
There are good noobs, there are ones worth teaching and I am not saying not to help them. I am saying that many times they do not want help. If a noob wants help they ask, otherwise they just tek 2 krog.

I used to teach noobs the basics occasionally, but nowadays if you 1v1 a one-stripe you're about as likely to be teaching a noob as you are to be "teaching" a smurf.
If I have a 1v1 battle open (rarely) I take whoever readies up first, and play my best regardless. Before smurfing became common I would go easy on the one-stripers. I was embarrassed once by a smurf, and that's all it took.
Too bad there's really nothing we can do about smurfing now that !smurfs is gone. We need that functionality back. Perhaps ChanServ could provide it, since it can be trusted with access to IP addresses?

Re: Attacks on new players
When I play with a nub that listens and thus helps to win the game I always try to remember to give them some complement like "well played." I have been known to .kick and .take if some nub starts talking shit instead of taking advices though.picard wrote:Good stuffs
You will go far with that attitude, I wouldn't be surprised if you get good one day.lbctech wrote:I enjoy playing with people who are very good at the game, and sometimes people who dont know what they are doing get on my nerves. After not playing spring for about 8 months I came back and started playing a bit, most of the games I was in had a noob here or there, the treatment of said noobs by more experienced players was terrible, I even surfed as a 1 chev for a while to see what happened and it was rediculous.
No wonder spring has a declining player base, most noobs get abuse before they even get in game, and once they're in it gets worse.
Experienced players - on my own team - would comm nap my comm, build over my mexes, shout at me for doing the wrong thing, even though I was doing was blatantly the right thing at the time. 60,000 minutes, I know when to attack and when to defend ^^
At least try and make an effort to be accomodating to noobs boys, spring is only gonna get smaller if you don't, I certainly wouldn't have hung around if it was like this when i first installed spring.

Frankly, I'm shocked I survived those first 100 hours myself, looking back.BigSteve wrote:After not playing spring for about 8 months I came back and started playing a bit, most of the games I was in had a noob here or there, the treatment of said noobs by more experienced players was terrible, I even surfed as a 1 chev for a while to see what happened and it was rediculous.
