Groundscars don't work on svn versions (spam? probably)

Post by Caydr »

I've probably spammed this all over the place before my surgery but don't remember. I would probably just sit back and assume it's already known about, except that apparently some maps work fine. So, just to be safe...

Groundscars don't work on most maps, for some reason, when using the latest SVN builds. For instance, 3823:

Image
Altored Arctic, works. For some reason. Only one I've found that works.

Image
Altored Divide, not working.

Image
Small Divide, also not working.

Since they're broken anyway, maybe when this gets worked on somebody could alleviate that hardcoded 256x256 limitation on them too. I've got some really nice new 512x512 ones here that I've made, but had to downsize them.

Had some minor surgery, yeah... was in bed for a couple weeks there. Did I miss anything important?

Heres 1 explanation:

The other explanation:

What would all that gray ground be? The ground isnt normally that colour on those maps.

Af, decals are rendered to the ground texture.

Caydr, after checking out the trunk run \trunk\installer\builddata\build.bat, then copy \trunk\game\base\springcontent.sdz and \..\..\base\spring\bitmaps.sdz to your spring install to update them. Maybe that might fix it, although...

They work for me. Maybe you didn't install the SVN update correctly?

Rattle, are you sure? I remember a lot of people saying that decals looked strange under fctories fi they went out too far because of terrain, or if they were built on the edge of a cliff and the decal went off the side.

Yes, rattle's right. And groundecal looks strange near cliff edge because then they stretch all along the cliff, since they are projected over the terrain.

Ground decals in the SVN turn white if you enter and leave LOS view IIRC.

So, I turned shadows off and voila, I have groundscars again :|

It's a known issue with shadows then, Tobi? Very strange that it would still work with certain maps.

L33t photosauce.

So in any case, can that 256x256 limitation be removed if it's not a lot of work?

Well actually I was under the impression it didn't work with shadows off. But according to your shot it doesn't work with shadows on, which contradicts what other people told me... Maybe it's an ATI issue?

I'm pretty sure, just look at ground decals on deformed or hilly terrain.

Hmm, I tested again, and here are what happened:

Start with shadows off => decals are black.
/shadows 1 =>decals are grey.
/shadows 0 =>decal stay grey.

Start shadows on => decals are grey.
/shadows 0 =>decals stay grey.

I'm on Nvidia.

I should stop using that FPS manager widget when testing ><

I think I noticed this before transparent shadows were added.
