Re: DWARF FORTRESS
why didnt they make this game in 3d by using OpenGL instead using crappy ascii graphics? even i can make 3d game with OpenGL...
Re: DWARF FORTRESS
1. The fancy 3d graphics would pale to the descriptions ingame.
2. It does use OpenGL.
3. You can? A game this complicated? Please do.

4. Time spent. 1 guy makes the game, and it has roughly 1000 characters already, as if someone has the time to make 1000 models solo.lurker wrote:1. The fancy 3d graphics would pale to the descriptions ingame.

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Basically, what material you find depends on what geological layer you are digging into. On the embark screen it shows you what rocks are available to dig in the biomes where your fort area is. The ones to keep an eye out for IMO are in order of usefulness, limestone, any sedimentary rock, granite, gabbro, gniess. Avoid pretty much everything else unless you have no option due to there being some other feature you need in the area.
Re: DWARF FORTRESS
what im trying to find is, whats this ore and wtf do i do with them?
Re: DWARF FORTRESS
kind like what this guy saidErom wrote:Magnetite is an iron ore - get some smelted and you can make some iron and steel, perfect for weapons and armor. Platinum isn't useful for weapons or armor, but it's very high value, so some platinum statues or furniture are a great way to increase the value of a room.

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Between the two links I posted you have a description of every mineable material, with the exception of gems.
[edit] otherwise just enter the name of the material into the wiki, the wiki has all the information.

I have, and it's great!Muzic wrote:Wow this thread has had alot evolution from the first original post..
Who here has actually just faught off every seige with dwarves and no traps?
Sure, your military gets decimated once in a while, and the gobbos occasionally kill your most important dwarves, but it's fun!
The trick is to constantly train new wrestlers and put them in steel plate. Don't be afraid to recruit an entire immigrant wave!
Re: DWARF FORTRESS
currently in a metaphoric layer or what ever its called, ive discoverd 2 sets of gems, pink stone, and blue stone. im gona make a blue trade depot!
Re: DWARF FORTRESS

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Suggestion: make a green glass depot, it'll match the color of the vomit once your dwarves get cave adaptationpharoph wrote: im gona make a blue trade depot!

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
that reminds me.. is they only way to get sand is top harvest it from whre the land meets the see and from the trade depot? caue thats just gay.
Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Deserts and sand dunes also have sand... but yeah, unless your map has sand on it, you can't get it (not even from the trade depot).
Re: DWARF FORTRESS
You have to disconnect the area to cave in ENTIRELY from the rest of the world. No stairs, no pillars, no ramps etc.pharoph wrote:does anyone know the best wqay to cause a masive cave in? ive tried it once but with no success.
Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Im about to make some traps on my fortress, and I need some tips in how globin invaders think... can they be deceived into entering something that looks like an entrance, or are they omniscient and will go straigh for the real thing?
Also, what I can use chunks for? They just keep rotting in my refuse storage cause they arent used and thats anyoing :)
By the way, for cave-ins you dont need to cut the diagonal connections, those dont count... so watch out as well :) (Just to leave things clear, if imagining the area in 3d the cubes dont touch each other with the whole side they dont count)

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Chunks just rot, they can't be used for anything.
Goblins use the pathfinding algorithm, so they can't be "tricked" like you describe. They don't, however, avoid traps once one of them gets picked off, so if you make a hallway lined with traps they'll all just stupidly charge down the same hallway and gets butchered.
