Kubuntu is just ubuntu with the kde packages installed and used instead of the gnome ones, so you don't really have to reformat.

i have kde4 on ubuntu and also gnome at the same time, just install kde packages and select as session kde on login screen and it's done

I had the same very annoying problem.
I just turned off the screensaver, but I think running spring windowed could work.

running spring windowed is a better idea anyway, you can use your WM to make it maximized while preserving all the features like alt-tab, etc.
