Would you rather have awesome looking terrain sacraficing filesize, or crappy looking terrain while making filesize go way down?

I play quake3 with texturing turned off...

I like good looking terrain. Hard drives are getting cheaper and bigger anyways...

Issac is practicing the ancient art of sarcasm, but for him, I'm sure play is more important than asthetics.

Well, I've just built us a decent test map to play with. Not some fricking gigantic over-prettified lagfest, but a tight 8X8 that should perform well even on not-so-awesome hardware.

And Forb, what part of Tobi's independent verification of my results did you miss? I could add a lot more points, but oh noes, that'd be flaming  Heaven forfend that somebody gave your attitude back to you ;)

Go here.

And no, keep your settings on whatever you normally use. Since you get terrible FPS with other SM3s, you're the baseline.

I don't think we need to make posts like those two. You can PM your thoughts to Argh and FA if necessary.

I've just tested FA's SM3 map and SMF map of the same thing.

With no AA, the SM3 map performs a lot better than SMF. In Tab view SM3 gets ~ 45-50 more fps, at close up view ~35-40 more fps, and in middle range views ~10-20 more fps. The only time SMF gets better fps is when it isn't having to render much (e.g. zoomed out in a corner, or in a fps view). It gets 200-300 fps, where as SM3 stays pretty stable at around 90.

With 8x AA SMF gets ~10-20 more fps consistently in pretty much all views.

Want a tissue?

I don't make maps for other people. I make them first and foremost primarily for me. Cry and whine all you like, but I don't care. I never asked you to play on any of my maps. They are simply there in case you decide that you would like do play on them. Therefore, don't come whining to me if you don't like your decision.

I design my maps to show off the best visual quality (and hopefully in most cases gameplay) that spring has to offer. If you don't like it, mars and smalldivide come packaged with spring.

In the end, I'm not making you do a damn thing. You are doing it because you made a choice. I am not to be blamed for your choices. There are plenty of games available to be played on altored.

zwzsg, it does not take me 3/4 of an hour.. maybe 10 minutes for me. Is it the server that is causing slow download for you or is it your connection?

Hey, nobody is perfect.

Remember, you can't be an Objectivist unless you ascribe to the entire philosophy by Ayn's words, and while you're similar to an American Libertarian, you're supposed to hate them.

Yeah, I'm not fond of Rand.

But everybody loves 50 page monologues and wooden characters! What's more, everyone loves books that make their point by page 200, but continue to page 1080!

Reading Atlas Shrugged ranks top five on my list of "things I wish I'd never done, because I hated myself for doing them"

Uh, right. In other news.

I suppose the best thing to do with giant maps like that is consider them akin to Picasso's work and look at them from a asthetic standpoint, rather than a practical map for tournament play or whatever.

what was it that you described me as neddie?

Ah, but see nemo, gundam plays well on maps that are 20X20 or larger.

Giant filesize (ie, Picasso's multiple 80+mb maps don't stand a chance of getting much playtime), rather than map size. I'm just saying that maps with a large filesize (like almost all of Picassos, some of Forbs) are impractical for most groups of players, because there will always be a few people in a battleroom who don't have a super fast connection.

I totally understand that various mods work best on maps of a certain size.

Some of oyu may not have understood what I said. So I''ll as it in a few sentences this time...

He says that I personally am making everyone in his game wait for 3/4ths of an hour to play. That is complete bullshit. HE is making everyone wait 3/4ths of an hour because he does not have the map that they want to play on yet. I had nothing to do with it.

I described you as what? I'm missing the line - but I assume it has something to do with dear old deluded Rand.
