I shouldn't have to spend the game mashing the function keys just to see how the map works. Mappers put hours, even days into texturing their maps, and then us players never ever see that work because we spend all the time in the blasted function-views. Textures should be informative before being sexy.

"mashing" the function keys? If that is really how you currently play I think your play style could use some changes. I only press F4 when I build mexes. Well, actually I don't press F4 when I build mexes, because it is usually switched to metal view automatically.

Also, Metal patch graphics are nice and all, but the F4 view lets you see the exact density and placement of the metal. This can be important on maps like altored divide where the different patches are of different sizes. Sure, there are metal patches of different size/design that indicate more metal, but that's not as intuitive as the green coloring and is harder to make out from the zoom level I play at.

Who here plays with F4 on constantly?

Not I, thats for sure. Just I turn on f4 when I need to place a Mexx, and turn it off when I need to...not place a mexx.

To be honest, I think the whole metal map concept is silly. A more consistent system where every metal patch had the same size, or the map was entirely metal would be preferable. The current system is just clunky. You should be able to tell how a map plays without having to use normal view, F2, F4 and other stuff.

However, I imagine that most maps don't get played because you have to dredge through tons of crap to find the good ones.

It might be a good idea to seperate maps on Unknown files and kin according to who made the map.
I think the lobby should be modified to allow easier categorising and browsing of maps that you have - after you have 100+ maps you can't be bothered to trawl through them to find a new map so just go with what you know.
So i suggest the following features to be added to the map browser:

-Sort by name, author, size, rate(see below), number of times played, max metal, ..etc

-A rating system built into the lobby server where players can rate a map after they've played it - this is displayed in with the other maps stats in the browser so lesser played but quality maps may be found faster

-A random map selection button for when you want to try something different in your collection

Might be nice if rating were weighted by experience. One would assume that the rating from a star is more reliable than that from a one chev.

since when does rank matter...
you have star noobs who would give river dale 10/10 for its balance
you have 1 chev pros who like OTA remakes because they are pretty and functional and give em good marks
PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES :O :O :O
and vice versa
oh and can i repeat
LOL
LOL
LOL
1: theres lots of maps. and lots of maps being created
2: people will play what they want you idiots. leave them too it
3: people actually don't WANT to rate maps because they don't CARE. If you want to try a map you TRY IT you don't worry about other idiots opinions, and as soon as some fool doesn't play a map because it 'has a bad rating' the entire system has FAILED! FAILED FAIL FAIL FAIL. And if the system isn't good for that what IS it good for?
4: I don't think a single map maker has complained about this issue.
5: You are all silly! damn silly!
sillier than a toasted POPSICLE full of silly!

I would weight the rating by ingame time if anything, although not drastically since it would skew the results too much.
The chance to vote for each map could come up as a pop up box but should only come up once -after playing it for the first or second time - it shouldn't become annoying or intrusive.

I think these are most played maps (in order):
- SpeedMetal
- Altored Divide
- Comet Catcher
- Green Comet Basic
- Greenfields
- Small divide

When i played TA, most played maps were:
- Gods Of War
- Gods Of War 2
- Great Divide 2 (no air, no bb, no emgs :D)
- Painted Desert
- Comet Catcher
- Great Divide

Gods Of War was played all the time, 90% of games, and i hated that map :D
Now in TAS i hate only SpeedMetal :S because it makes lag...
To me, i think we have better map choises now...

Also, in TAS we dont have rules anymore, like it was in TA: "no air, no bb, no emgs" etc... never heard anyone saying those :)
