I intend to finish the new map stuff after the next release of spring. It might take a lot of time to get the little bugs out and have a proper tool and spring integration.
Part of it will be to abstract the current spring map system, so multiple map formats can be used (including the current map format, for backwards compatibility).
Any time frame when the new Spring version is going to be released?
days, weeks? Little bugs keep popping up every time, and certain bugs take longer than you expect, so it's really hard to say. asap afaic ;)

If you want the real development log:

Mainline code:
http://svn.berlios.de/viewcvs/taspring-linux/trunk/

Tobi and greenail are working on sync and cegui experiments here:
http://svn.berlios.de/viewcvs/taspring- ... ches/tvo1/

The change to crossplatform code has introduced and enormous load of bugs, combined with the christmas inactivity, thats what has taken so long.

What's currently being done:
-bugfixing
-we are writing the code towards sync support, (which includes savegame support)
-bugfixing
-model rendering changes are being discussed and worked on, although in a seperate branch for now.
-bugfixing
-Greenail has added a CEGUI console in a branch, Chris Han volunteered to do a new CEGUI based in game gui, and as opposed to jouninkomiko he has contributed a lot to spring itself already, so we're likely to get actual results from him ;)
-I have to start integrating my map renderer once I have it debugged.

When do we get this, and could we debate a total purging of the map archive based on the upgrade to a new map format? Probably not, as people will feel rather nasty when their 28 hour terrain render becomes obsolete. :/
