Really the original with water was fairly realistic, sand on a seabed is realistic. But it does not look realistic when you remove the water. In reality grass would grow even in the grass(in such a climate) so you would have lots of grass clumps in the desert or even a firm grass covering. Only takes 2-3 months for an area like that to be covered in grass after it is drained of water.
