maybe by the year 3k we will move away from base 10 also.. just saying, numeric systems, languages, borders they are only concepts. Funny how we judge what is real by our senses and what is right and correct by our society. Yet whether we are brains in jars or in bodies we will never know.

Personally I don't care what system we use obviously metric is better but as a programmer I had to think in base 16 for a while for some of my classes. WUT NAO!

I'll agree that base 10 is arbitrary... but at least the metric system in internally consistent... 1 cubic centimetre of water at sea level and room temperature weighs 1 milligram and represents 1 millilitre of volume. It being the same base as our primary number system also makes math involving distances much simpler.

doesn't matter. still think it just arrogance "my system is better" blah blah. Most Americans who like metric are the same douche nozzle poser apologist dickheads who act like America is the only place doing evil in the world.

base 10 only makes sense because people can count to ten on their hands unless they are fucked up.

You will laugh (maybe)

But 30cm of snow isnt that much, we had that around christmas.

but still fucking cold

I still measure everything in elbow lenghts too.
I thought dicks was the world wide standard by now - beeing one dick= 15 centimeters, aka 2/3 of a ellbow. I mean, even the us army took that standard, misspronouncing it as klick.

So you have two dicks of snow height, there, and it wasnt event that difficult. Now lets do some chalkcalc.

a spring tree is 15 Meteres heigh. 1500 centimeters/ 15= 100 dicks.
a pewee is 2/3 of a spring tree, means he is 10 Meters heigh. 1000/15 equals 66.66 period dicks. Bloody math that is. ;)

and that is bad because?

im happy we dont write numbers like XMCVIIXCM anymore... except on the fking movies to display the year >_> idiots...

im sure humans will never move using other than base 10, theres just no point doing that.

I can't help but smile when I hear people stop going to work or school because of snow. Some of the pictures forb took show just a few centimeters (maybe an inch?) of snow on top of the cars. That's not much. :-)
Nah, he's got an OK amount of snow. That'd be a snow day for the schools in Vancouver. People wipe snow off of cars, remember. It wouldn't block transit or close businesses though, although a few people in the more far out area's might not be able to get to work if they don't have snow tires.

No. It makes the most sense to have a measurement system that conforms to your number base system.

Base 10 is absolutely based on the fingers of the hand, which I still think is somewhat practical. None the less, if we change our standard number base system I think we should change to a different measurement system that matches it.

Maybee we should make a Gundam based measurement system- How many meters has a zaku? It has snowed 0.05 Zakus today :)

No, it isn't arrogance. I much prefer churning through large numbers of data and only needing to find out where to move the decimal place at the end, than to have all these mixed feet, inches, miles, pounds, slugs, calories, and horsepower, and need to compensate for all the inconsistent bases. Base 10 is better than base nothing.

It really isn't a huge deal though. Its not like you are a better person for using metric, its just what people learn. You could also say that its about time for one consistent language in the world, but most people know their native language in addition to English. Its about the same, most Americans know the US customary system in addition to metric.

seriously? they can use metric system fluently? i dont think so

i think most people who use empirical system fail to realise that they still write numbers in base 10... to get best use of their system, they should also write their numbers in base 12, then it would make sense.

Americans know both systems btw, but we only use standard internally.

Metric makes no sense for this reason: You immediately jump from centimeters (Which are fucking tiny!) to meters (which are fucking huge!). Of course there is the decimeter which for some very strange reason no one uses.

Whereas with standard we have graduated measurements. 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard (a yard is like half a foot shorter than a meter... ish).

That and real men use miles, only pussies use kilometers. Also, trademark, you're very entertaining to troll :-)

is it that hard to write extra number? its much more error prone if we used dm among cm, also its easier to read too.

hmm... interesting... how do you write 100ms? or 100┬Ás?

Metric jumps from centimeter to meter (decimeter = 4fags), but it's never inconvenienced me any.

0.5m, or "haffameter" as Texans might say, is a perfectly good alternative for most anything you'd need to describe that fits in between.

"little less than haffameter"
"About wonanahaffameter"
..."haffahaffameter"?

I know my height in feet+inches, my weight in pounds and when you go to a Canadian bar the beer comes in pints and the shots come in ounces... recipes still call from cups and teaspoons etc... so yeah... it will still take at least one or two more generations to weed it out.

I don't get why people seem to ignore the decimetre... a litre is one cubic decimetre for example... it seems rather useful.
