Instead the original AFLobby and most of all Unity Lobby played a huge role here. Unity Lobby for bringing competition, an AFLobby for the slew of features that got stolen from it.

if it makes you feel better, aflobby never worked for me, so no chance to copy from it, and didn't run tasclient either since 2 years, next? ( I am still entertained by the memory when you came to the channel and said we stole your X button on the allyteam starting boxes, when simply both of us copied independently what window manager decorators do since decades )

I was just noting that as soon as I showed off my start box manager with drag and drop boxes, tasclient and springlobby had the same mechanism within a week.
