well the actual year is off a bit because some monks screwed up the tracking when europe was in the dark age, and the whole system is based off of some mythical characters, and some questionable events.

Bah, I find it offensive you'd compare Titanic to 2012. Titanic, although I found it horribly boring and didn't really like it, was obviously a very high quality film with good dialogue, acting, tense drama and well designed scenes. 2012 on the other hand was absolute bullocks, a cheap CG-oriented thriller more about watching things get destroyed than any sort of drama or storyline, and falls into the same boring catagory as a million other disaster movies that all follow the same bland principle, the only real difference being the advancement of CG technology over the years (re: Armageddon, Independance Day). In Titanic the entire "disaster" scene lasted only a few minutes -- it was all about building up character and story for the first part and then showing how those characters dealt with the disaster and its aftermath. In 2012 we get what, fucking John Cusack dad-of-the-apocalypse whose only moment of tension is dealing with his failing family relationship and trying to piece it together as the planet explodes under him, with of course some dime-a-dozen comedy relief provided by a cast of "eccentric" and/or foreign characters who come and go for no apparent reason and a happy ending where our wholesome American family finally learns to appreciate one another after dangling off the cliff of destruction. Yawn.

Even though War of the Worlds (Tom Cruise edition) had pretty much the same storyline (broken family thrust into an apocalyptic scenario, navigating through it and coming out the end a stronger and more appreciative bunch), it did it so much better. Even though I hate Tom Cruise deeply as a person he did some good acting in this film (although he pretty much does the same character in every film, at least its a good character), someone I could personally relate to, and the drama of the movie was epic, not only because it showed the action but also because it showed how people were affected by it. In 2012, the end of the world is nigh and the only real effect on people's lives we're shown is some comic-relief-providing Russian millionaire complaining about his 20 Mercedez Benz and caviar and his lapdog-owning fur coat-wearing trophy bride. In WotW we see how people have been torn from their lives, wandering rural America in a constant state of terror and panic, turning on each other like wild dogs -- how one would expect people to react to a serious cataclysmic event.

Overall, huge disappointment, one among many of the last couple years -- The Day the Earth Stood Still (seriously, you have this big giant awesome monster who everyone loves who stands in a fucking park for half the movie and shoots down a stupid missile with laser eyes before turning into a giant swarm of killer flying termites to provide for the climactic end of the world? COME ON), Avatar (probably the worst movie in relation to its hype ever), Twilight New Moon (seriously, if I even have to tell you why I will fucking murder you, you fucking gothic emo failure of a creature), etc.

1/5, and only because the CG was decent -- but thats the only thing propping this above absolute 0.

As for the whole 2012 myth, people can be so fucking retarded sometimes. Seriously? Some stoneage people banging on rocks and sacrificing themselves to random sungods decide that making calenders for 4000 years in the future is a bit redundant and suddenly everyone's OMFG WE GUN DIE! They had to stop sometime, didn't they? Did you expect them to just keep on cataloging the passage of stars and seasons and shit for infinity? I mean, honestly, Microsoft didn't update their computers to provide for clocks going from 1999 to 2000 and we didn't think this meant that Bill Gates was some sort of profit who foresaw the world ending right then and there (though of course people still thought it would), and if I went to a Wal-Mart and couldn't find any calender past 2010 I wouldn't freak the fuck out thinking they were predicting that the world would fucking end on December 31st 2010.

Also this legacy of mythical enlightenment we give to our ancient civilizations is really ignorant. Yes, people back in the day without electricity and computers and really anything at all utilized other forms of simplistic scientific observational processes to do things that today take us a couple of seconds on Google. Don't underestimate what a mindfuckingly bored Aztec peon 4000 years ago can accomplish with absolutely nothing to do but sit in some grassy field staring at the stars.
