Not even for lag reasons and gameplay interest, i find big games (more than 10 player) a bad thing for 3 reasons:

1. Chance that a player disturb others (leave (ingame or just before start), desynch, play very bad, draw on the whole screen, long map download etc.) increase drastically: more potential disturbing player, and more players disturbed each time it occurs.

2. More players = more time needed to load a game = more wait.

3. More players in a game = less games = less diversity.
