no rolling pls, i think it would be worser. annoying to look, and waste of time to wait the right link...
static links would be alright, some sort of frame with just links and some other font than chat font is... blue color to links etc.
And of course that should be possible to minimize when you have got enough of it.

I already said it here 2x in this thread.
We cannot distribute using normal sites because:
a) those sites dont allow anything but sdz/sd7 in mods
b) we dont even have those sdz/sd7 they are cosntructed only on client side using CaDownloader or SVN updater
c) even if we had sdz it would be impossible for us to distribute it to all sites 2x per day
d) even if those sites allow .exe in mods, CaDownloader itself self-updates often (in recent weeks aprox 1x per day due to rapid p2p system development). Only link guaranteed to point to latest downloader version is the one at caspring site.

Downloader is already nearly done in springlobby and its going to be integrated with tasclient too when im sure its stable enough. Then there will be no need for any site links, but we are not there yet.

The problem is probably about to fix itself since I'm getting a new PC... but from my experience, it's not at all "stable enough"
Re: Im really starting to get sick of this!
Licho doesn't CADownloader update itself automatically? And it would not be unreasonable for content sites to allow installers for mods with exe extension. I know Evolution is distributed that way also. Does it also need a topic link? What about MyPetMod (C) that I choose to only distribute off of http://www.ma-tea.com and so that I can claim that I must advertise with a topic link (and get away with it because I'm a moderator) and spamming #main. I don't think you're being fair to others modders who would love to have the exposure you get from a topic link, but it's up to you to realize that (or not) remove the link, I'm not going to do it.
Re: Im really starting to get sick of this!
Yes I will certainly add link to evolution rts or s44 when asked.
(Btw I also offered evolution to use the same downloader system)
I'm thinking pragmatically here. CA is second most played mod atm. Sites dont allow .exe atm -> there is currently no way for newbies to get that mod using "standard" ways and there were several people asking each day (yes even the day I advertise).
Its to provide convenience and not "advertising" since topics are hardly real advertising (adding some link there wont convince anyone to download it and start playing it). Besides cadownloader gets you all other mods and maps you need so its usefull for everyone not just people who want to play CA.
Btw even if sites allow .exe downloader is still not working for some people (Linux users) who have update script on downloader page linked from there..
But thats a minor problem.

I remain forcefully neutral on this matter.
Re: Im really starting to get sick of this!
Well at the time there was only an ftp server. But is it feasable to run that system on a shared host? Either way, batch files work well enough for evolution for now.Licho wrote:(Btw I also offered evolution to use the same downloader system)

I don't see how a ticker would be even close to as annoying as the spamming in #main, and it definitely wouldn't interrupt conversations, and would be guaranteed to only ever occupy a small amount of the screen space.
Further, you can always offer the ability to hide the ticker for people who know all the links.
I think the criticism that you have to 'wait' for the links is illogical. Noone would ever be waiting for a link through the ticker, because that's not what it is there for. Anyone searching for a link can just ask, or look in the obvious places. The ticker would be purely there for people who don't know about the map, the mod, the community news piece, whatever, and hence would not be looking for that link in the first place. Hell, to deal with such a problem it would be reasonably easy to have an 'expand' button on the ticker that simply lets you scroll through all the tickers currently in rotation.
It seem so to be a logical solution to this problem that would also be quite a helpful feature of the lobby.

I prefer lurkers system. When I really start going there end up being a lot of SVN commits. In many cases it is somewhat vital for me to keep SVN and current version seperate, due to the fact that at times I simply commit to backup my progress so far on a certain project.
Also, for end users, the Evo updater is incredibly simple to use. It can update itself to a new version of the updater, it can update the base files by itself, and most of all It requires little to no effort on my or the end users part to make updates/run update and I still get to retain Versioning control while being extremely to set up on both ends of the pipe.
Not to mention the fact that the way the ca downloader has grown, it would be much akin to swatting a fly with an elephant at this point. I do appreciate the offer tho.
