KDR_11k wrote:1v1 is more representative for the skill of the individual, in a team game the whole team influences wins and losses. A player can have weaknesses that other team members compensate for and use his strengths to contribute while in 1v1 any weakness leaves you open. I think for training or measuring your ability ultimately a 1v1 is a better choice as it's really up to YOU to win such a game and other people don't factor into it (the opponent doesn't really count for that matter) so you know a loss is when you failed and a win is when you succeeded, no "maybe my team sucked" or "maybe my team won for me" uncertainities.

Overall I'd say you should always make sure you can deal well with 1v1s because skills from 1v1 are transferrable to teamplay but not always the other way around. Being good at 1v1 gives you an advantage in any engagements, team play is added on top of that but in the end the better you can fight the better you can deal with the tasks you do for your team and 1v1 battle skills will always be relevant at some point or another.
I would add that playing 1v1s gives you a confidence that you can still pull through a tough situation in a team game, even if you allies are failing around you. So often players just give up, or give the enemy more territory than necessary because they fear losing. 1v1 players are not afraid of losing, and so they continue to try to win (often focusing more and trying harder) when team players would be folding. 1v1 players have an extra reserve of skill, attention, micro, or whatever that they can call upon when things aren't going so well in a team game, and that's why you want 1v1 players on your team.
Saktoth wrote:People seriously do just play games to enjoy it. Sometimes people play tennis just for the exercise and as a social get-together with cardigans and white wine, not because they want to become a professional tennis player.

A player who tries to play a 1v1 against someone with this attitude will just go 'Woah, this guy takes this computer game way too seriously. I cant be bothered with this shit.'
Well, people who are good at 1v1s probably are good at other competitive things in life. For example, when I play 1 on 1 basketball, I try just as hard to win as I do in spring, same with cards.

Ya rly. Surely it's the case that someone who doesnt want to win at a Video game probably doesnt want to be the best at most other things.

I seriously don't understand this supposed mindset of people who just don't care whether or not they win or lose? Why wouldn't you? Its human nature to be top of the tribe, head man, the one people look up to. Being competitive is also human nature. I don't honestly believe that so many of you don't mind losing and dont want to win.

Some of you say you are perfectionists then say you don't mind losing and don't care about winning - thats bs - you're not a perfectionist if this is true.

And when someone like smoth says "I don't like to win, only to come 2nd or 3rd or lower" I think - is this guy insane?

Perhaps you aint motivated enough to put in the extra effort and dedication required to make it so you can win, but that shouldn't mean you dont WANT to.

I would like to add one more positive aspect of 1v1 games.

Quite a few people have told me they dont like to 1v1 because its so intense and you need to be on the ball to play a good 1v1. I prefer 2v2s to 1v1s when i have my friends as allys and big team games can be a nice break/relaxing.

Im not sure where i would "rank" among the top players, i put up a pretty good fight, but there is a massive difference between playing a "star noob" to playing someone like PRO_randy or Daywalker - it's easier playing 2 star noobs than them.
fixt lol
Go to hell and DIE
how can you say stuff like this when i do it gets a "no - moderator"? anyways back to the point:
I'll rip off your head and shit down your neck

@ demo and the thing about winning and losing -
sure i like to win but id rather have a loss where i learn something than an easy and empty victory vs a noob that teaches me nothing

But wait - I play other games on the engine. Why am I bothering with this frustrating failure which has never, ever approached balance?
1) I have never seen anybody classify you as a good player.
2) You have done no rebalancing of anything.
3) Other mods often have just as crappy balancing, it's just not as noticeable because they're not played as much.

But wait - that would be attempting to make an accurate post. Why bother with that when you can flame the most popular mod with impunity because you're a mod?

1) I'm competent at most of the games on the engine. Since most people are incompetent at the one game they play, I think we can all agree that I'm approximating good there. Besides, since when were you one to base your opinion on that of others?

2) I have released no rebalance. This is because, shocker, I'm a perfectionist.

3) Groundless assertion. You're not even trying here.

Being a moderator gives me no additional protection from the community, quite the reverse. My opinions remain my own, and my general position of disfavor among fanbois of all games on the engine remains as before. I just feel compelled to act on your requests for interference and make sure that when you break policy, you hear about it.

Second, I've never outright flamed BA. I consistently point out flaws in the game design and express my discontent with the manner in which the community as a whole considers BA. I've always been thankful for the rebalance of Tier 1 which was the chief contribution of the project to the content, and I started playing BA when it was WarC Annihilation.

So, Tombom, please stop attacking me and return to the issues at hand.

I acknowledge neddie as a good player...

I have some fuzzy thoughts of BA, I generally don't play many mods. Why? Carbon copies, tired of seeing the same shit. I remember playing it when it first came out, and a couple of days ago I had a few battles, too.

Wanna know what I think? It has bad graphics (lol, duh, all mods need bad graphics to have good gameplay), too many units which most of them are carbon copies of each other, there are small differences between certain units across the lines from each other. I seriously could give a whole page about how much I dislike BA if I went and played about 10 or 20 games more.

I don't feel like playing 10-20 more games... So, I won't.

It's as groundless as posting "BA sucks".

This isn't an outright flame? :?

You were the one who called BA a "frustrating failure" in a thread not about BA...

Yeah, the mod comment was besides the point.

I don't play 1v1s because I suck. 1v1s are the best indicator of skill at any RTS game.

It's an expression of frustration. I've been trying to get similar changes through for over a year, since before it became BA, since I first opened up the game and looked through the mismash of numbers and content. The difference, as I would feel is quite apparent, is the intent. If I were mounting an attack upon BA without support, that post would have appeared in a vacuum. Sadly, I'm sure 5% of my posts have been criticisms of AA and BA, so it doesn't come out of left field - I'm sure the only one that ever had an impact was my request that Caydr add the Commando. It also would not have been phrased with sarcasm in mind.

Second, this thread is about BA. When Flop talks about Spring players, he talks about BA players. When he talks about the skill level, he's referencing "Star Noobs," "Speedmetal Heroes," "Greenfielders," etcetera - you know this because these are the people he's had a chance to observe in the game he has played.

1v1....
Im sure flop was talking about ba..
Well in the last few days iv seen 3 games of flop vs other good players, all of these were flash/gator spamms.
What can i say?
After playing spring for quite a while now im kinda getting tired of it.. What strategies?
You mean how to adjust ur build order of cons flash and llt?
It just gets old.. the only places 1v1 ba gets interesting are on small maps, where u can actually use some other t1 units.
T2 units are of course in most cases not an option and t3,well,you wont see t3 units in 1v1 games ever(please no smart asses that will say the played a 1v1 and built t3).
So 1v1 games with ba tend to use about 5% of the mods potential.
While team games actually allow you to use strategies,of course they are slower and players that play in team games have not developed such a strong feel as to when and how many flash/llt/hlt/cons/ to spam at the star plus they are slower and usually succumb pretty fast versus 1v1 ba players.
People want a not porcy mod.
Than we get a mod that on maps like cc and bigger(where u actually have the possibility to have an awsome huge scaled 1v1 war) u cant play with any other unit besides the fastest ones..

Well I think the mod is also balanced for team games of appropriate size for the map and the players are skilled. It is not balanced for 8v8 on da divide or greenfields or speedmetal, nor should it be. Also good players use a lot more units than just flashgators, however if you just base your opinions on comet catcher, you're not giving the mod a fair chance.

Excuse me? i talked about other map sizes as well.. i divided 1v1 games to bigger maps and smaller maps.. i think i was actually pretty clear and tried my best to be objective.
