Well... I agree there seems to be a trend towards diagnosing virtually every minor deviation from mental normalcy as a disorder of some type. That being said, PTSS has massively negative effects on people who suffer from it, so it's beyond the realm of innocuous psychological disorder IMO.

I tend to believe that normalcy isn't a reasonable prerequisite for psychological health. The ability for different people to approach different problems in totally different ways is part of why humanity has survived as long as it has. Adaptability caused by deviancy is an immensely positive thing within the species. The symptoms of PTSS are beyond normal deviance however... I think it would be hard to find a more solid example of true psychological damage.

It is hard to define normal deviance, but I too dislike the tendency of the medical establishment and general public to label every level and sort of psychological or physical difference a disorder.

I take particular displeasure with very personal "disorders" such as GID and the medical oversight of such things as genital size and sexual preference.

I don't think it's a problem to diagnose people with psychological illnesses.
Having an diagnosed (psychological) illness is not a problem on itself, most people are quite happy with a borderline, autistic, phobia or some other syndrome. Only when it prevents them (or people around them) from functioning it becomes a problem.
And sure "normal" people are rare, the *real* problem with a diagnosed problem is that people get discarded as "sick", it should only help them to deal with the problem more effectively.
