From DF's prespective the dual core pentium is roughly only about 25% more powerful than the athlon. It's a single threaded application, and a Pentium clocked at 2.8 isn't all that impressive. Most likely the world creation difference was just random luck. A reasonable amount of rejected worlds will significantly increase the generation time.

Actually, rumor has it that DF is multithreaded.

CPU usage graphs beg to differ, unfortunately.

Only ~25% more powerful? It's got more than twice the clock speed. Although I remember vaugely that it has to do more with the actual amount of work accomplished per clock cycle than how many clock cycles you can cram in a unit of time.

Too bad I only get 30 FPS on that athlon in DF, and on the smallest possible map too. My dual P4s give me 40ish.

By the way... is an Intel quad core worth it?
I was considering a Q6600 and then over clocking it to a little over 3.0 Ghz.
Or should I wait for AMD's new 'fusion' cores? Then again, by the time the 'fusion' cores are out, the Intel Quads will be dirt cheap. hmmm...

Anyone getting near 100 FPS on DF? I want to know how fancy of a CPU to get when I build my next machine. If only I could get over 25 FPS on the max map size...

I get near 100 FPS with a small starting area and looking at a reasonable z-level. I have an Intel Core 2 T7200 processor running at 2.0GHz.

I run in the 80-100fps range (looking at the surface, and with a minimum size local area, of course), and I run it on my lappy, which is a crappy 5 year old 1.6ghz pentium 4 mobile.

Fuck that, DF don't need no stinkin' graphics.

I seriously think that DF would be horrid with actual 3D graphics and the like. The ASCII graphics display the necessary information clearly and concisely, in a way that would be impossible in 3D.

The interface is great. Screw mousey interfaces. Navigating with hotkeys is so much better, faster, and easier on the RSI. I hate it when i cant navigate with hotkeys.

I feel alot cooler with the hotkeys, like some sort of pro on a computer working for an intelligence agency just using the keyboard to navigate through all this top secret stuff

I agree, but it would be cool if they were at least good enough for you to be able to reconize stuff winhout the need of pressing K and placing the cursor over it the first time you see it... :)

I would love mosey interface, but I can live with hotkeys. and by the way, once something very weird happened: I minimized the game for something and then I maxed it again the mouse stayed on screen for a few seconds: Options in the menu I clicked it the mouse were highlighted and worked...

Im interested in knowing how many dwarves people managed to gather out there and, if it is a gigantic number (100, 200) how they manage to control it all...

200 dwarves is the limit, you can have 80 after about 3-4 hours of playing (depends on your computer, too.) There are some nobles with useful abilities to manage such a horde'o'dorfs.
