Darkside: Extinction

We are nearing the end...
Will our charicters be happy at the end?
What happened to Eve Montoya?
What has Jason been doing all this time (Nothing, actually. Well...if you count sitting around and being really really depressed as something...)
And what about that enemy fleet hanging over our hero's heads like a bunch of modly...tangerieens!
Eve looked at her hands. They were...fuzzing in and out of existence, their substance going foggy and smoke like, then blurring apart. She focused and the hands came back together again, becoming at least semi-solid.
├óÔé¼┼ôI'm afraid...that won't work anymore├óÔé¼┬Ø Michelle's voice came from behind her. Eve spun around, standing up. She backed partway through the table, her legs foggy. ├óÔé¼┼ôW...Wha...What are...├óÔé¼┬Ø Eve stopped, unable to speak.
Michelle sighed, ├óÔé¼┼ôI came here because...I wanted to thank you├óÔé¼┬Ø.
├óÔé¼┼ôWe both do├óÔé¼┬Ø Taraka said, suddenly behind Eve.
Eve turned half way around, still in the middle of the table. ├óÔé¼┼ôWh...What is happening to me!├óÔé¼┬Ø Eve gasped, feeling another spike of pain. Her entire body fuzzed slightly.
├óÔé¼┼ôWhat was bound to happen when you crossed the threshold├óÔé¼┬Ø Michelle said, walking to Eve. Taraka joined her. Something about the two was...different. Softer, somehow.
├óÔé¼┼ôYou've been keeping this form through sheer inertia...because you've held it all you're life├óÔé¼┬Ø Taraka said, ├óÔé¼┼ôBut you're inertia has stopped holding you back. You're going to have to accept your...transcendence├óÔé¼┬Ø.
├óÔé¼┼ôI'm...I'm afraid├óÔé¼┬Ø Eve said, holding her shoulders with her hands. The door to the house burst open and Hicks ran in. ├óÔé¼┼ôStay back, human├óÔé¼┬Ø Taraka said, not even looking at Hicks.
├óÔé¼┼ôWhat are you doing to her!├óÔé¼┬Ø Hicks ran forward, reaching for Eve.
├óÔé¼┼ôDon't touch her├óÔé¼┬Ø Michelle raised her hand, a blade sprouting from her wrist, pressing against Hicks' throat. He stopped, not wanting to die. ├óÔé¼┼ôIf you touch her...you'll die├óÔé¼┬Ø.
Taraka turned back to Eve, sighing, ├óÔé¼┼ôI think you've proved something...I think we've all gotten a bit too big for our britches├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôW...What aare you talking about?├óÔé¼┬Ø Eve gasped, another spike of pain shooting through her.
├óÔé¼┼ôFor millennium...all we've done has been keep the universe back. Whenever a race started to get to our level...we killed them off. Exterminated them. But your breaking of the threshold..well..I think its proven that you don't have to be the strongest. We've all come to a conclusion that its time for us to go├óÔé¼┬Ø.
├óÔé¼┼ôUs...we...who are you!├óÔé¼┬Ø Hicks shouted, straining to go forward, held back by the blade near his throat.
├óÔé¼┼ôThird Stages├óÔé¼┬Ø Taraka said, humoring the human, ├óÔé¼┼ôWe have a government of sorts...and this governments has come to the conclusion that its time for us to go to something better├óÔé¼┬Ø.
├óÔé¼┼ôL...Leave├óÔé¼┬Ø Eve said suddenly.
├óÔé¼┼ôWhat?├óÔé¼┬Ø Taraka turned to her.
├óÔé¼┼ôLeave├óÔé¼┬Ø Eve said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI...I don't have much time...and...Hicks├óÔé¼┬Ø
Michelle's face softened and she slid the blade back into her arm. She looked to Taraka. Then they were both gone, the air rustling slightly with their absence. Hicks walked to Eve. ├óÔé¼┼ôDon't...Don't touch me├óÔé¼┬Ø Eve said, stepping back, ├óÔé¼┼ôAnd don't say anything├óÔé¼┬Ø.
├óÔé¼┼ôI..I don't have much time├óÔé¼┬Ø Eve said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI'm going beyond...I don't know where. But I'm leaving├óÔé¼┬Ø she smiled faintly, ├óÔé¼┼ôI know that I scare you...you and everyone else. But I'll...I will still be around...after a fashion. And...I...I'm fading├óÔé¼┬Ø she was literally slowly phasing out of existence. Hicks reached for her, but she stepped backwards.
├óÔé¼┼ôGood by├óÔé¼┬Ø she said. Then she was gone. A wind rushed through the ship, blowing Hicks back a step .
Hicks stood, looking at his house. The flowers were all dead. He walked into the place, past the ruined table. He looked around, eyes roving around the dead flowers and the bed. He got to the bed and sat down with a thump, feeling as if he had been kicked in the stomach. Then he felt the faint breeze...as if someone was gently stroking his face. Then it was gone, as if it had never been.
├óÔé¼┼ôWell├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike sighed, putting his feet up, ├óÔé¼┼ôI think that ties everything up├óÔé¼┬Ø.
He was sitting in his room, dictating to his diary entry to his computer, and was feeling, in general, quite happy with life. Eve was gone...but it still felt like she was around. It was strange, and no matter how much Mike felt like he should feel sad that she was gone...he just felt a sense of contentment.
He pressed the off button on his computer and sighed again, sitting up again. Then he sat back in his chair, turning on the computer. ├óÔé¼┼ôAddendum├óÔé¼┬Ø he said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI...├óÔé¼┬Ø he stopped.
├óÔé¼┼ôNever mind├óÔé¼┬Ø He said, turning off the computer.
Jason felt empty. There was nothing else to do. Lizzy was dead. Eve was gone. His cause was gone, the human race extinct. His hand slipped over the handle to his pistol. He slipped it out, chewing his lip. ├óÔé¼┼ôI guess...I guess I'll see you soon Lizzy├óÔé¼┬Ø he said softly. The gun tasted sweet.
The ships drifted through space, everything quiet. The enemy fleet advanced, but not as quickly as they had before. A month passed. Then two.
A year was over before Mike knew it. It seemed that he had slipped into an easy rhythm of doing the busywork that seemed to occupy a captain in the marines. Helena married Cain, dropping out of the marines, quoted as saying ├óÔé¼┼ôI want to get out while I'm still alive├óÔé¼┬Ø. Mankowski, despite Mike's trepidations about it, took over the squad. New recruits moved in, old recruits moved out. The recycling system on the ships broke, got repaired, broke again, were repaired. Life moved on.
But the enemy fleet still got closer.
Part Three: Lay Down your burden
Fox cricked her neck, slipping her hands behind her back. Then she bowed. Mike cracked his knuckles, smiling. ├óÔé¼┼ôSo├óÔé¼┬Ø he said, ├óÔé¼┼ôready to deck you're commanding officer?├óÔé¼┬Ø
Fox smiled. She had been working on breaking her conditioning, but it was hard. She had had a hard time fighting with other recruits in the training exercises, but those had been with pads, in a tightly controlled environment. It hadn't been dangerous enough.
This was. Mike had said that she would wear pads. He would not. When Fox had objected, pointing out that she didn't want to hurt him, Mike had said ├óÔé¼┼ôI'm a brain core...you'd need an anti-tank rifle to hurt me overmuch├óÔé¼┬Ø
The two marines started to pace around each other, dancing on their toes. ├óÔé¼┼ôSo├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said, hands up to defend his head, ├óÔé¼┼ôI hear that it's you're birthday in three days├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôI'm going to be five├óÔé¼┬Ø Fox said, dancing from one toe to another. Her feet were actually longer then a normal human, allowing her to have more bounce to her step. She took a swing, but it was only a light exploratory one, testing Mike's defenses.
Mike backed up slightly, then slammed forward, bringing a fist about. Fox dodged just barely in time, but it was not quite fast enough. Mike's fist skimmed her foam helmet, sending her slightly off balance. ├óÔé¼┼ôCome on├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said, backing up, ├óÔé¼┼ôNot going to break you're conditioning if you just defend, right?├óÔé¼┬Ø
Fox nodded. Then she tackled Mike, her helmet slamming into his chest. Mike was sent falling backwards, bending in the middle. He landed, Fox over him, grinning. ├óÔé¼┼ôOw├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI don't think that is a allowable move in sparring moves├óÔé¼┬Ø. Fox nodded. Mike was suddenly aware of how close she was. Then Fox stood up. Mike took her offered hand and she helped himself to his feet.
Fox and Mike bowed again, starting their dance around each other again. Mike hummed the tune to ├óÔé¼┼ôSing Sing Sing├óÔé¼┬Ø.
├óÔé¼┼ôWant to dance?├óÔé¼┬Ø Fox asked, feinting a sudden jerk forward.
├óÔé¼┼ôThis is dancing├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said, grinning. Then he punched, fist slamming forward. Fox ducked and slammed her fist into his stomach. Mike felt the air whiff out of him. He groaned.
Fox backed up, ├óÔé¼┼ôAre..are you okay!├óÔé¼┬Ø she asked. Mike stayed doubled over, groaning. Then he attacked, swinging. Fox didn't even manage to dodge, Mike's hand slamming into the side of her helmet. She staggered, head spinning. ├óÔé¼┼ôOw├óÔé¼┬Ø She gasped, standing up. ├óÔé¼┼ôSorry├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said, backing up slightly.
Fox attacked, kicking out. She hit Mike in the side, her feet digging into his rib. Mike attacked back, but Fox dodged. She slammed both of her fists into Mike's side, not exactly the most finessed attack. Mike fell over, landing on his back again.
Fox held out her hand to help him up, but Mike yanked her down. She fell on top of him, landing expertly. Mike smiled at her. Fox smiled back, her nose almost touching Mike's lips. ├óÔé¼┼ôFox...├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said. He remembered once trying to say the same thing to...Lizzy. It was even harder the second time. ├óÔé¼┼ôI├óÔé¼┬Ø He said after a long pause.
The door to the dojo opened. Two sparring partners walked in, chatting. Fox was suddenly standing helping Mike to his feet. ├óÔé¼┼ôI thought we had another half hour├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said.
├óÔé¼┼ôSorry guys, but...the man at the front desk said that we get it next├óÔé¼┬Ø one of the sparring partners said.
├óÔé¼┼ôThats fine├óÔé¼┬Ø Fox said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI'm done here├óÔé¼┬Ø.
She walked out. Mike followed her. She walked into the locker room. Mike had the insane impulse to follow her, despite it being the womens locker rooms. Then he turned to the front desk. The man there was writing down something in his data slate. ├óÔé¼┼ôUh...what the hell├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said, ├óÔé¼┼ôWe were booked for another half hour!├óÔé¼┬Ø.
The man rolled his eyes and pointed at the card that was above the desk. It read:
1)No spitting
2)No swearing
3)No sex
├óÔé¼┼ôI...I don't swear├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said, face reddening. The man rolled his eyes.
Fox yanked her helmet off, her ears uncurling as she did so. The ear that had almost been shot off last year was healed, but she had forgone getting a new one. She found having better than human hearing just made her hear things that made her feel worse. Also people said the scarred ear gave her character. Fox slipped her pads off, her fur matted down with sweat. She had fur. Did she need any more character?
Fox toweled off. Once she was done her fur poofed out like a puff ball. She slipped her shirt on, flattening the fur with her hands. She looked at herself in the mirror. She no longer cringed, looking at her elongated, fox like face. She no longer avoided people's eyes when she talked to them. She went to the bar without being invited by someone else. Yet she still felt as an outside. When she walked out she saw Mike walking to her.
Fox didn't want to spend time with Mike right now. He...He did things to her, in her mind. Fox forced a smile to her lips and said ├óÔé¼┼ôSee you tomorrow Mike├óÔé¼┬Ø. He watched her leave, trying to say something.
Fox got to her room, and stripped her shirt off, throwing it to the corner. She slipped her pants off, walked to the shower and set it to cold.
Keller sighed. ├óÔé¼┼ôMakes you think├óÔé¼┬Ø he said, looking at the Persephone. It was what had gotten...Jason here. After his suicide, Keller had taken the ship into the cargo hold and, after a year of having the scientist Gloria, pick it to prices, Gloria had come to him, saying ├óÔé¼┼ôI've gotten the cloak to work├óÔé¼┬Ø. Now Keller was here, waiting to see what Gloria had come up with.
Gloria was hidden under a pile of parts, fiddling with a small sphere that was set a few feet away from the Persephone. Keller looked at his watch. ├óÔé¼┼ôMy son is going to bed in a few hours...so could you hurry this up so I can at least spend some of the evening with him?├óÔé¼┬Ø
Gloria stood up, swearing loudly at her cloak. ├óÔé¼┼ôIt worked a few minuets ago!├óÔé¼┬Ø she said. Then she turned back to the cloak and kicked it as hard as she could.
Then she, the cloaking generator and a large chunk of the floor and the Persephone...disintegrated. Keller gaped. ├óÔé¼┼ôOh...├óÔé¼┬Ø Gloria said, ├óÔé¼┼ôIt works├óÔé¼┬Ø.
Then a message was bounced from the P.A. ├óÔé¼┼ôWould the captain please report to the bridge├óÔé¼┬Ø.
Keller sighed as Gloria repaired, turning the field off. ├óÔé¼┼ôCan you start making more of those? Or at least a bigger one?├óÔé¼┬Ø he asked. Gloria nodded, ├óÔé¼┼ôAll I need is more power...maybe I could use a bit of the Star drives mechanizaim...hmmm├óÔé¼┬Ø she turned away, pulling out a data slate as she did so. Keller left her, walking to the bridge.
He walked into the bridge, Cain's face filling half the screen. He looked to have been waken from an early bed, a small splat of lipstick on his cheek. ├óÔé¼┼ôYou...you've got a bit of red there├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller said, pointing. Cain blanched and whiped it off with his shirt.
├óÔé¼┼ôSo├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller said, looking at his bridge crew, ├óÔé¼┼ôWhat's up?├óÔé¼┬Ø.
├óÔé¼┼ôWe're getting a signal...its from the enemy fleet├óÔé¼┬Ø the sensor officer said.

Comdic/romatic mix ups! Flowers! Bluffs! Coutner bluffs! Explination of how Jason came back from the dead. Its really simple, I swear.
Well...simple for brain cores.
Adam was alone. The others were gone. Even Eve was gone, or at least the Eve he had known. So Adam started to peer at the galaxy around himself. He found the slender thread of humanity. Adam sat back, metaphorically speaking, and watched the show.
├óÔé¼┼ôCyanide├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller said after a few moments, ├óÔé¼┼ôI remember you from Dobson after action report├óÔé¼┬Ø
The green eyed woman smiled faintly, ├óÔé¼┼ôYeah├óÔé¼┬Ø she said.
├óÔé¼┼ôYou were dead├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller said.
├óÔé¼┼ôYeah├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôRipped to pieces...completely gutted├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôYeah├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôAnd yet...here you are├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôI just did the same thing Jason did├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôWhat did Jason do?├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôHe never told you?├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôHe told Lizzy├óÔé¼┬Ø
Cyanide sighed, sounding completely bored with this conversation, ├óÔé¼┼ôHe had a backup copy of his memories and personalities. When he died, he simply had an automated message wake his backup body back here at SOL├óÔé¼┬Ø
Keller nodded, ├óÔé¼┼ôNow...to the task at hand├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôAh yes├óÔé¼┬Ø Cyanide said, ├óÔé¼┼ôthe task. I demand that you turn you're entire civilian population over for evaluation and enhancement├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôWhat do you mean by evaluation?├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller asked.
├óÔé¼┼ôIf they don't meet the par├óÔé¼┬Ø Cyanide said, ├óÔé¼┼ôWe don't Transcend them├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôAnd what if you don't Transcend them?├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller asked, already sure of what Cyanide was about to say.
├óÔé¼┼ôWell we're going to have to have some kind of...proletarian class├óÔé¼┬Ø Cyanide said, smiling.
├óÔé¼┼ôWell├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI have a bit of a problem with that. Strange as it may seem...I actually believe in the Constitution of Colonized Planets. I don't believe that you have the right to decide who gets what, who lives and who dies├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôAnd I believe that you are completely naive├óÔé¼┬Ø cyanide said, ├óÔé¼┼ôLook around! The human race is almost gone. We're going to need to cut off the...gristle. Come out of this fire pure├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôWell├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI think its all a moot point. We out number you├óÔé¼┬Ø
Cyanide laughed, ├óÔé¼┼ôI believe we-├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôYou have yet to notice the fleet coming up behind you?├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller asked, typing some commands in his console. After a few moments Cyanide closed her eyes. Then she opened them and smiled, ├óÔé¼┼ôOh you mean...our fleet├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôY...Your fleet?├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller said, only a slight waver in his voice.
├óÔé¼┼ôWe've been using your friend, Vale, to make sure we are kept appraised of the situation on the Prometheus├óÔé¼┬Ø Cyanide said, ├óÔé¼┼ôThat fleet is on our side...I mean, Vale is a brain core, after all├óÔé¼┬Ø
Keller hung his head.
Mike sighed, sitting in his room. He supposed the enemy fleet was coming up soon. He would hate to die before telling Fox what he was feeling. He stood up and walked out the door. Halfway to Fox's room he turned around and headed to the Prometheus.
Fox sighted, sitting in her room. The enemy fleet was going to arrive in a few weeks. She supposed that it would be a bit silly to not tell Mike what she was feeling. She stood up and walked out of her room. Halfway to Mike's room, Fox turned around. She had just had an idea. She headed for the Prometheus.
Mike road the shuttle to the Prometheus, feeling butterflies in the stomach. This was silly. He had done much more dangerous things. But, Mike supposed, one just never got used to this kind of thing.
Fox arrived at the shuttle bay and found she was going to have to wait ten minuets for the next shuttle to arrive. Fox sighed, ears flattening to the side of her head. She needed to straighten her self out. Fox spun on her heel and walked to the bathroom.
Mike walked into one of the ten hydroponic gardens that dotted the Prometheus. He found a batch of flowers and stopped, looking around. A gardener stood there. ├óÔé¼┼ôHey son├óÔé¼┬Ø the grizzled man said, his face wrinkled in a way that was spreading thought he older population, now that anti-aging treatments were no longer available. Mike thought it was odd that he could be at least twice as old as this man, yet he looked four times younger.
├óÔé¼┼ôYeah├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike said, ├óÔé¼┼ôCan I have some of these flowers?├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôNo├óÔé¼┬Ø The gardener said without hesitation.
├óÔé¼┼ôWell├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike gulped, ├óÔé¼┼ôSee...there's this girl and I want to make a great impression...and I thought some flowers would go over perfect├óÔé¼┬Ø
The gardener smiled, ├óÔé¼┼ôYou know...your the first person to come by here to get some flowers to give their girl...here├óÔé¼┬Ø he plucked fifteen flowers and handed them to Mike. Mike grinned, looking at the flowers.
Fox walked out of the bathroom, finding that the shuttle loading area was completely chock full of people. She shoved her way through the crowd and got to the shuttle. The shuttle launched and ten minuets later she was walking through the Prometheus's hallways. She found a hydroponic garden. The gardener there was smiling as if something really amazing had happened. He looked at her and blanched.
├óÔé¼┼ôUh...can I help you?├óÔé¼┬Ø he asked, trying not to stair at Fox's face, ears, fur and such.
├óÔé¼┼ôYeah├óÔé¼┬Ø Fox said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI'm looking for some flowers...you know...for a guy I...I kind of like├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôAh├óÔé¼┬Ø The Gardener's face split in a grin, ├óÔé¼┼ôYou're the second person to come here for flowers! There was a young man here for flowers├óÔé¼┬Ø
Fox blinked, ├óÔé¼┼ôOh├óÔé¼┬Ø she said, ├óÔé¼┼ôWell...I know we've only got a few kinds of flowers, but-├óÔé¼┬Ø
The gardener handed her a bouquet, already picked. ├óÔé¼┼ôI thought that this business might start to boom...as of ten minuets ago, but whatever...├óÔé¼┬Ø
Mike stood outside Fox's door, holding the flowers. ├óÔé¼┼ôUh...Fox├óÔé¼┬Ø he said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI...I know I'm your commanding officer, but...well├óÔé¼┬Ø. He stopped.
├óÔé¼┼ôHi Fox...you're....you're quite a woman├óÔé¼┬Ø Mike stopped. This had been easier with Lizzy. But then again he was being shot at at the time, and being shot at made one's libido go into overdrive.
He sighed and decided to take the plunge. He rang the bell. Nothing happened. Then a computerized voice said; ├óÔé¼┼ôSorry, the occupent of this room is not home├óÔé¼┬Ø.
Mike sighed, turning away. He was about to walk down the hall.
Fox came around the corner to Mike's room. She rang the bell and got the same message that Mike had gotten at her room.
Fox closed her eyes. She supposed he'd be down at the bar, seeing as how it was...what...near three O'clock. She turned around, knowing she would never manage to gather the courage to try this again.
Mike walked around the corner to his room. Then he slammed into Fox. Both of them fell back, flowers flying every where. The two marines picked themselves up, grabbing flowers. Fox found herself holding a bouquet comprised mostly of daises, not even remotely similar to what she had picked up. Mike found himself hold a bouquet made mostly of roses. He had gotten daises.
Then he looked up and saw Fox standing there. ├óÔé¼┼ôI got these for you├óÔé¼┬Ø he said, handing her the flowers.
Keller hung his head. Cyanide shook her head, smiling faintly. The rest of the bridge crew looked as shocked and dismayed as Keller felt.
Then Keller raised his head. ├óÔé¼┼ôSo├óÔé¼┬Ø he said, ├óÔé¼┼ôI suppose you don't have a chance├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôWe out number three to-├óÔé¼┬Ø Cyanide started.
├óÔé¼┼ôCome now├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller grinned, ├óÔé¼┼ôI mean, if you've been kept appraised of whats happening here, then you'd know that Eve is more then capable of stopping you├óÔé¼┬Ø
Cyanide's eyes flickered away for a split second. Keller grinned, ├óÔé¼┼ôI mean...she can almost kill you, even from this range├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôWell├óÔé¼┬Ø Cyanide said, ├óÔé¼┼ôWe...we still out number you enough to make Eve unab-├óÔé¼┬Ø
├óÔé¼┼ôEve├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller said, choosing the word that best described what had happened last year, ├óÔé¼┼ôEve is dead├óÔé¼┬Ø
Cyanide's eyes bugged.
├óÔé¼┼ôVale would never work for you├óÔé¼┬Ø Keller grinned.
The screen blinked out and Keller laughed, immense feelings of relief flooding him. ├óÔé¼┼ôI knew Vale would never work for her├óÔé¼┬Ø he said to his bridge crew, ├óÔé¼┼ôPatch me through to her, by the way. Make it a secure channel. And tell my wife that I might be a few extra hours late tonight├óÔé¼┬Ø
