I like your solar, Bob. But 2k polies may be a tad much for a building that is usually present in very large numbers.
I also really enjoy your take on the Geo. It looks excellent - and volatile at the same time :D

Ya, it could go down to about 800 to 1k easily. I just need to run some optimizations and redo some things. I don't know why I went overboard with that ring that goes around it...

I always though that the original core and arm, closing solars, had a cool concept..

I agree with wombat on this one.

And trying to defer from most solar model designs, I would let myself be inspired by solar concentrators (which is basicly another way to set up solar panels).
But they often can rotate to align with the sunlight direction, and this might pose a problem.

I think even more interesting would be to try to keep the idea of using rather big surfaces as solarpanel at one side, and as armour at the other. That seems efficient to me.

Yeah, I'm gonna agree with Gota on this one... I love all the models, but the solars just don't seem practical at all, and a circular dome doesn't really make much sense, and imo doesn't really fit with the rest of the core models.

they are making BA/OTA replacements. there are no concentrators there. the solars make no sense in BA as they are now either, as the advanced versions pump out 2.5 times as much energy, but have less solar-surface then the basic ones, and except maybe the arm (simple) solar, none of them makes even remotely sense. making sense and sticking to the originals even a bit is not possible.
as bob said, it is sci-fi.

models really do not have to look as "shinny"/nice with low GFX settings. some users would even spec battles with a dot-wars/minimap-client only.

solars should really face the light direction already inherent (shadows). Flat basic solars and directional adv solars? But I'm not so picky, these new models really do look great.

I'll keep these solars for now, and when it comes time to wrap everything, I'll wrap them first. That way we can decide what to do after that.

I dont think this is a problem. One could argue that it is the definition of "advanced" to be smaller and to have a better overall efficiency.

PS.
Models are awesome!!

@caldera:
Could you show us how the punisher looks with reflections and shadows?

Oh that reminds me, I forgot to explain the adv solar. So, the way its supposed to work is, the inward facing panels are all solar, and the thing in the middle is supposed to spin as if it is amplifying the effect or something. And, as that happens the middle circle thing glows right in the center and charges up. (Has no effect on its production, it just creates a nice effect when it is first built.)

As for the regular solar, I am going to put more plates on the top covering the "vent" thing. That way it looks like its getting a lot of sun, its animated, and it still looks relatively weak. The look of weakness is something the ota version never really had.

Well, to be fair, the solars are fairly tough, enough to take a few hits at least.

You are running with no shadows and no reflections. This is useless for critique. I liked the older version.

It looks like caldera's screen has shadows and reflectivity.

because
quickly replaced the colors with alpha channel
i think if the white stuff dark/teamcolor like in the render it would look alot better already.
