The texture limit is really the true bane of .3do, doing per-square textures is not as bad if you're proficient with making tons of textures to use.

The problem is I want an easy way to convert 3do to s3o.

Important part --> IN SPRING 3DO FILES DO NOT USE GAF AND THE MILKSHAPE IMPORT PLUGIN ONLY SUPPORTS GAF TEXTURES AND AS UPSPRING ALREADY CONVERTS 3DO TO S3O MINUS TEXTURES THEN THIS PLUGIN IS TOTALLY USELESS <-- Important part

Please tell me how I can convert a common format such as pcx, png, jpg, bmp, etc without having to sit there for hours clicking file, open, selectingthe file, convert/save as...

Essentially, does anyone know of a commandline converter, it doesn't mater if it for example only converts tga to gaf as I can use perl and netpm to convert batch to whatever quickly then convert that to gaf. I'm surprised the only gaf convert appears to be gui which cann't be automated quickly.

Think of the nvidia dss converter command line tool. At this rate I am just thinking of creating my own simple command line converter for gaf.

Okay, here's my problem, why are you trying to convert anything TO gafs in the first place... if you have a bunch of 3do files then you already have the gafs for them... and if you don't, then just get the TA version of the mod you are trying to convert... AA right?

http://aa.planetannihilation.gamespy.com/download.htm

( http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ta-a ... p?download )

And if the mod is just using the gafs from TA... I'm pretty sure someone can post a link to them on file-universe...

There's no good reason to convert a 3do to an s3o. The whole point of doing an s3o is the get the advantages of uv mapping, 3do's ported directly would not only be inefficient but be much more difficult to work with.

He's already mentioned a number of times that the texture limit prevents the addition of any races to big TA based mods... simply making a single s3o texture that basically contained all of the needed image files and mapping it by UV to the neccessary "quads" on converted 3do model would circumvent this texture limit while using the same amount of system memory... so since the devs arn't interested in supporting the 3do model format to allow more texture space we will need to switch over if we want more custom textures with new races...

Personally the short answer is NO THERE IS NO EASY WAY FOR YOU TO DO THIS YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO RETEXTURE ANY MODELS YOU WANT TO CONVERT BY HAND UNLESS YOU ARE A VERY SMART CODER WHO CAN MAKE A PROGRAM TO DO IT FOR YOU... thankyou

I need a way to mass-build gafs. I'd like to convert all my fancy new buildpics back to OTA for the old version's players.

Sorry but gaf dump is one way only, gaf to bmp, I want a simple bmp to gaf system which I will probably have to make myself.

Because he doesn't realize that if he just uses ANY texture, then he can put his models through the whole 3DO-to-S3O conversion process.

Not that anybody who actually knows what they're doing would ever do such a thing  Some people will drive twenty miles to avoid walking three blocks, though...
