Quake might deserve a spiritual successor. Quake 2, 3 and 4 never really were that. On the other hand, maybe it's better to not do it, it'd be crap anyway. The theme is such a hard thing to get hold of, it's a mishmash. :)
And you'd need kickass multiplayer, which companies can't do anymore. (Money questions mean they have to dumb it down to too noob-friendly.)

Also X-com aka UFO:Enemy Unknown. (There was Terror From the Deep but it was really exactly the same game with a tad little different content.)

Bamph and all the X-com Lovers...Meet...

the Spring of X-com, UFO: Alien Invasion! http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ufoa ... e?download

Useing a VERY updated QUAKE II engin, UFOAI is litteraly X-com, but prettyer. It's still in beta stage, and just has the combat system down. But more is on the way. Keep whatching the SKYS!

http://www.hard-light.net/hosted/fsport/ Try it, it's good. I think you'll also want FS2_Open to play it, but I can't be sure.

rawr.
AvP 1 was scary. not AvP2. It doesn't even have flares! (if it has it doesn't need em)
Aliens need vents to hide in and darkness to be frightening. AvP2 was like Quake: AvP wars imo. Lights almost everywhere, an little to no vents to hide in.
Ok, well facehuggers are really scary.

Aliens want darkness!

AVP 2 DOSE have flares. I don't know what crazy ass version of AVP 2 you played, but its Dark, Scary and Has flares.

Maybe you played AVP 2's expansion, Primal Hunt. Which was complete and utter crap.

And don't worry, its a mistake anyone could make.
