Doah, good call about eh system specs, I didn't notice that line (durrr).
hey I just had a thought. You can uninstall Dial up networking in XP and then reinstall it via the cd. It is possible that DUN could have gotten corrupted over time. That used to happen a lot, and since I've been on cable forever now, I tend to forget a lot of the little tips and tricks about DUN.
Go into control panel and then add/remove programs. Next click on the box that says add/rem windows components. Remove Dial up networking, restart, then add DUN via the exact same process.
I doubt a format will help, but if it's a last resort I completely understand.
Also, call your ISP and find out what types of protocol they use. It will be US Robotics or Lucent. Next, check your modem, if it is lucent (prolly is) and your ISP uses USR protocols, then you need to buy a USR modem. Same for Vice versa <-- That alone may very well fix the problems as well as allow you to achieve greater connection stability and speed.
Let me know if any of this does/ doesn't work. I have a few more tricks up my sleeve, but they are a bit more in depth so I would prefer not to go there if not needed.
error 1004, or 10004 , game crashes randomely.

hey hey, guess what i fixed baby.
Well after downloading a file from a friend, i got some crazy virus, last night.
it shut down my net, closed down all my anti virus solutions and i was screwed.
its hilarious it happened because i was debating to FORMAT my hard drives and do a new install.
Well my hand was forced, and i lost alot of my saved files etc.
probably 2 years worth of saved files, like stories, essays etc. which iwas keeping to read about 5-10 years from now :) after i forgot about them.
im on my 3rd FORMAT, since on the previous 2 i became reinfected by about 5 different worms on connecting to the net.
and the error hasnt hit yet.
something was messing with my comp for a long time and spring was using something on the net when i hosted that made it come out or something weird like that.
but all is well now, reformat guys :) see if that fixes it for you! "keeping my fingers crossed"

i have to say, that i have never gotten rid of error 10004
ive gone through so many formats with fresh (legal) copies of windows xp pro SINCE I MADE this post..... 6 months ago?
anyways its gotta be something in the code or something weird that isnt compatible with my modem or something...
theres no possible way it can be fixed by any of the things listed below.
Anti spyware
Getting rid of your anti spyware
Virus software
getting rid of Virus software
Doing a fresh format of windows.
not doing a fresh format of windows but reinstalling network connections..
Please anyone with any info on this error please give any information you know about it, other than the error information from microsofts website.
i love the game but god this single thing isnt fun :/

I've been getting the Error 10004 for a good while now. The windows form that pops up has the text "SHUTDOWN ERROR" in the title bar and the text displayed says "Error 10004: error sending data" and theres an OK button. If you're clicking too fast it'll shut the window before you even see it. I've only seen it running the AA 2.11 mod but then I haven't played too many other mods extensively. It can happen a short while into the game, or at any point after that.Forboding Angel wrote:Ungh, can't believe I'm helping you of all ppl.
Ok first of all posting your system specs would help a lot.
Second, here is an idea for you. Shut down every program in the taskbar and see if that stops it. Next try setting your packet size smaller.
You could try to get ahold of your ISP to see if anyone else is having this problem and has called about it.
Something that prolly won't help is to try to use a "Stay Alive" type of program that pings a particular website / ipaddress every 10 seconds to make sure your connection doesn't time out, but it's worth a shot.
And ultimately, you're on 56k playing a game that hasn't been fully developed yet, so don't be too suprised.
Also, try redownloading and reinstalling and see if that makes a difference.
I'm running a 3.4Ghz AMD Athlon 64 bit processor with 32 bit WinXP PRO. NVidia GEForce FX 5700 graphics card. I'm also running a dual monitor setup. My ingame resolution is 1024 x 768 and I've turned off all effects such as unit shine, 3D trees, reflective water and shadows. I'm on a wireless network with a 2mb connection speed. The error occurs both when other computers are on the network and when this is the only one, so I'm not on restricted bandwidth.
So far I've remembered having seen this error once when I tried scrolling left on the viewport and once when i deselected a unit by left clicking.
I have uninstalled, downloaded the whole package again and reinstalled. That didn't work, lol.
I don't have Trillian installed. I'm running Norton Antivirus 2005 and nothing else.
I don't think contacting your ISP will make a difference. (Posted here... http://taspring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/viewt ... ight=10004)TheLostDreamer wrote: 2GHZ pentium 3 with 1,5 gb ram LAN connected

I am not going to format my entire PC to get Spring running, nor should anyone else with this problem be expected to do the same.

I'd agree that the program exiting like it does is partly to do with the way the exception is handled. You can with many exceptions continue to run a program. Unless it's a fatal error, which it isn't stated as being, then the game should be able to continue running. It's on the developer to figure out how it can be handled in a way that doesn't affect gameplay, and for it to exit abruptly with a generic 5 word technical explanation is bad programming practice. Most exception handling can be done in a way that won't ruin your game. The way Spring catches Sync errors is a good example.http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/WSK-19980714-EM08.htm wrote: Question/Problem: Interrupted function call.
Answer/Solution: A blocking operation was interrupted by a call to WSACancelBlockingCall. An asynchronous signal (such as SIGINT or SIGQUIT) was caught by the process during the execution of an interruptible function. If the signal handler performs a normal return, the interrupted function call will seem to have returned the error condition.
Developer suggestions: You need to be prepared to handle this error on any functions that reference blocking sockets, or any calls to blocking functions, if you allow the user to cancel a blocking call. Whether to handle it as a fatal error or non-fatal error depends on the application and the context, so it's up to you to decide.
I'd say the developers need to look at the bit of code that's executed when a 10004 exception is handled.
