Do you think players have so bad short-term memory that they see a video of Spring1944, and when they have installed springlobby they have already forgotten the game's name?
Im sure they have enough of a memory to make a distinction between a ww2 game and a game with fucking robots, yes.
And to give an example, my buddy thinksome who now hosts our autohosts, came to spring exclusively and stays for s44, he was searching for years for a foss ww2 rts, so dont underestimate this.
Myself i could only get into spring due to s44, since it had a context that i could remotely understand, all other games completely overwhelmed me.
This mantras of "spring is an engine!" and "we should not promote the engine!" are misleading:
Spring is more than an engine, it is a plattform consisting of lobby & server & engine & players & content, that allows players to player a variety of games.
Indeed, no aruguing there.
Such promises have been made often, usually by modders who wanted others to help with their mod so that it would become some sort of flagship-game for spring. Other mods are then supposed to profit of their success by some trickle-down-economy style of some sort.
None of these projects ever had any success with their campaigns.

Im not against that sort of thing, not at all, however if this is supposed to work then we all have to pull on the same rope here.
smoth wrote:It is not a game either though. Players typically think spring is a game because the game files are called mods and players do not read mod(ule) they read mod(ification).
I thought they were supposed to be games and old people just use the old terminology modification.
It dont help that lots of things are referenced as mod rather than game, examples: modinfo.lua, moddev etc.

Normally I would agree, but that actually happened with a few steam people. Came in, thought s44 was evo. Played s44.

When I found out about it I was rather amused :-D

They quite liked s44
Thats nice to hear, but that just proves how unreliable this platform is for new people to find a specific game.

Actually, I "found" s44 by accident. I arrived here due to a suggestion from a classmate to play TechA together. He didn't stick to the offer and cited "shit pathing" as the reason.

This also speaks a lot about advertising...if even someone who has been searching for years (I have) for a FOSS ww2 game was not able to find it, then how are other potential players who might not care that much about free software going to find it? Speaking of that, Spring:1944 is not FOSS, just OSS. But I am fine with the licenses as they are right now and my search is over.

don't ask me, I have pushed for a long time to call us content developers as a general term.

Fwiw I'm more comfortable with the term "Content Developer" than gamedev/moddev. I feel that it is more accurate in general.

I used to believe in titles like mapdev and modeler but we all wear so many hats now that I think it is silly.
