Crickey 248 polygons? Where are they all?

I did a full one for 151 polygons, and put the picture up days before announcing the mod..

You can also find a picture of a stugIII and russian tank factory on the project media page.

168 of the polys on the T-34/76 are in the minor details - the light on the left of the tank, the thing opposite the light (not sure what it is), the back lateral cylinder (external fuel tank?), and the small dome opposite the commander's cupola (access hatch, I believe).

There's also quite a few polys generated by beveled edges - there for the smoothing effect on portions that are rounded on the tank.

Maybe I should just slap tracks on it and ignore the detailing? :-p

Yeah, most "details" are usually handled by textures to reduce gpu load.

And most of the round things can eaisly get away with 8 sections around it, and still look reasonably good.

Yours is missing track guards, Bruce. And yours has all kind of innacuracies, felix. No offence, it's a nice model, just not a nice model of a T-34.

Did I not say that it was unfinished?

I did base the model entirely off of a four-view diagram of a T-34/85, so any inaccuracies are either the differences between the 76 and 85 models, or also present in the diagram.

Okay, well, everything from the turret forward is supposed to be there. The rear needs to be fixed. Unless the cylinder and square behind the turret count as "all kinds of inaccuracies", in which case we're completely in agreement.

I was thinking more of the completely wrong turret shape (for a 76... but its wrong for a 85 too). Show me this 4 view. :|

Bah! You're right - the turret needs to be narrower in relation to the chassis, and needs more angle to it when looked at from above.

I'm currently working on refining the model, that'll certainly be worked in.

May as well let you all criticise mine too; of course it was for TA originally so I have an excuse! :P

Random render:

From the angle in which it would most likely appear ingame:

Two views of it from Wings - hooray for the Print Screen button!

The bad news: 299 polys. [edit] Either 85 or 121 in "minor details" - counting the external fuel tanks (the cylinders in the back) as important or minor, respectively.

A piece-by-piece poly breakdown:
Main chassis 10 poly
Turret 16 poly
Treads 42 poly x2 = 84 poly
Track guards 10 poly x2 = 20 poly
External fuel tank 18 poly x2 = 36 poly
Main gun 18 poly
Main gun base 12 poly
Lump on front right of tank (machinegun?) 37 poly
Light 17 poly
Radio mast 6 poly
Commander's cupola 12 poly
Entry hatch 25 poly
Box in back 6 poly
TOTAL 299 poly

FLOZi: Is that thing below the turret on the front a machinegun? I couldn't figure out what the heck it was from the schematic I have...

Started on the IS-2m1944; I have the turret mostly done, but have to go to work now - I'll try to flesh out the body and have some rough renders tonight.

That thread has both the semi-completed T-34/76 and semi-completed IS-2 in it, renders, frame shots, and the Wings3D files themselves.

Needless to say, 56k people should beware of long load times. Well, the pictures are pretty small, so not THAT long...

Tank drawings

To Felix the Cat: no offence meant, but your T-34/85 model looks much more like the IS-2 than T-34.
I have a link to Soviet tank drawings which you might find useful.

I used a 4-view drawing of the T-34/85 to construct the T-34...

Looking at the overhead of the T-34/85 and the overhead of my model, I'd say that they look pretty damn similar. Looking at the overhead of the IS-2 and my model, I'd say that they look about as different as they can look considering the many similarities between the two. However, I'll be the first to admit that I'm slightly biased.

I think all the tanks look the same...but then again im biased, as i think there are three kinds of tanks.

WWI tansk, WWII tanks and WWIII tanks.

Does anyone know of any model editors for Soldiers:Heroes of World War II? They'd make things quite a bit easier.

The turret is still too wide, and not 'pointed' enough, for lack of a better word. Yes it is a machine gun.

Cut up the 4 views and use them as backgrounds in your modelling app. This will give you much better accuracy. Also use less polies on your cylinders!
