How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?

Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
because it wou;d eliminate the NEED for startboxes while forcing a map change for the large player count. Players would join and say, oh, this is that 1v1 map.. instead of OH this is that map let's start box and it'll accommodate all player counts
Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
yes, mapchange to DeltaSiegeDry_32playerfix.sdz or FalsomDam_32playerfix.sdzforcing a map change for the large player count.

Something else I could see working for small games is a FFA host.
Yes, there is one but it only has large maps like Throne that work best with high player numbers - might as well play 12v12 at that point.
Last time I checked there were hardly any maps for small FFA in its list, in fact I think the only small map was Desert Triad.
Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
mapchange can be regulated by permissions knorke.
Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
Technically playernumber limited AH is already possible, without the mapthing needed. The thing is, people do not do it.
You make a limited host, someone else makes makes a unlimited host.
Guess where all the players will eventually end up?
Basically dont try to ban 12v12 but try to make 1v1 more attractive.

Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
I am not saying ban anything. but the problem is if you set the server for 8 players and the map is a 2 player map.. people will think it means 4v4 is a go because you allow for 8 and they just do start boxes.
Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
ok, here's my theory. its just slapped together in 5 minutes from what knorke said and from something I've been mulling for a while. so please read it as a whole and try to understand the gist.

the playerbase is spread too thin. skill-level-9 players can't play skill-level-1 players in small games.. but they can in an 8v8, right?
the old-hands that did stick around are even more experienced and the average player is now skill-level-5 instead of skill-level-3.. so random 1v1 games are less and less balanced. as BA gets older and older and the playerbase doesn't grow this problem gets worse.
solution: expand the playerbase. don't promote 1v1 inside the community, promote 8v8 DSD outside it (this is just one example idea I had in mind). at some point you will reach critical mass and it will spill over into variety of games played.

try to reach more players outside spring, yes.solution: expand the playerbase. don't promote 1v1 inside the community, promote 8v8 DSD outside it
does not happen currently. Sometimes there are 2 full BADSD servers and the third host is a 7v7 zK game on ArcherValley or something.at some point you will reach critical mass and it will spill over into variety of games played.
Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
perhaps "spill over" was misleading. I wasn't talking about full hosts.knorke wrote:does not happen currently. For a 1v1 to happen we need 2 players who want to try a 1v1 in the same place at the same time. Bigger playerbase = more chance of them meeting. If they successfully play a 1v1 they are more likely to do it again, thus self-perpetuating. If they fail they will resign themselves to DSD. so some critical mass is needed for games to run themselves.
If the 1v1s that do happen aren't good games (bad balance) then they won't self perpetuate either (from your experience). Promoting such games seems fruitless.
But, yeah, y'know, thats just my view. So the whole playerbase fell into this DSD blackhole.. but given thats what everyone plays how to market anything else?.. till you've got a whole cartload of fresh nubs, ofc.
Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
Why I don't play 1v1 very often:
1v1 is more competitive
competitive players tend to be cocks who will lord it over you, call you names, tell you how stupid you are, and how much you suck when they win.
when they loose, they will get angry and pissed off at you.
S44 is not so bad, I'll do S44 1v1. S44 players tend to be a bit more civilised.
I don't mind loosing, I'll quite happily play a game and loose if the other player is not a cock about it.
I'd rather play a game and loose, than sit in the lobby waiting for a game to start.

Experience speaking or...? Because I think that's your own stereotype.se5a wrote:Why I don't play 1v1 very often:

I meet it as well.
Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
Totally contrary to my personal exp.se5a wrote:1v1 is more competitive

In smaller games (1v1 - 3v3) opponents and team mates are much more forgiving and even helpful than in bigger games.

even if i am the worse :D
Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
+1 people are usually polite in small games, they usually give me a 'gg' after the win against me to try make me feel better
To promote small games, could we do something like sending a request message to a big DSD host with many players/specs such as '[Doe]John is waiting for a player in 'x' host', without leaving the 'x' host and login in the DSD host?
maybe this may help remind all these players that other hosts exist, with gentlemen waiting for some nice fight...
Moreover, when you see a single guy on a host, you never know beforehand if the guy is waiting for you, or has been here forever and has forgot to log out.
I know that sending such message to the general chat may work... but I don't think many players read it.
just trying to help...

yes, it is normal.se5a wrote:1v1 is more competitive
It happens but I agree with dansan that it is much more common on 8v8 games.se5a wrote:competitive players tend to be cocks who will lord it over you, call you names, tell you how stupid you are, and how much you suck when they win.

Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
well that goes back to what I was talking about. In team matches, the weakest player ends up taking a lot of the blame because people don't like to lose and love to blame someone as if only 1 person is really that bad. Sometimes that is the case but in an 8 player match, the other 7 players have a lot to do with that.
1v1 people rage a lot harder because they cannot blame others for their loss.
so you get a lot of stupid shit from competitive guys calling what you do bullshit or hax or whatever.

Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
Smoth I've never faced a situation where somebody got yelled at for winning/playing horrible, in 1v1 games that is. What I'm asking for is names. Because I can't think of any player that would do that, I know people who are making excuses because they lost (I often count to these players as well) but I've never seen anyone rage at someone just because they got their ass kicked.
Or has it happened to you and when? I can't tell how things were back in early 08 but I know how things have been since late 08 till today.

Re: How could we promote more 1v1 up to 6v6 games?
I haven't played many other rts games online, but I play Epicmafia sometimes, and I can say that people there rage a lot more than in spring. So some part of the rage is just there because it's online. Once you play in skype or mumble, people don't rage as much anymore.
But people can be too polite too, if I suck I still need to know it so I can improve. (but preferably in a way that doesn't ruin my confidence either)
