I'll have a bit more of a play around, check if it's saying anything in the app event log etc when I get a chance to sit down and do stuff other than work.

questions:
are there any settings saved to here that would cause problems with my and jool's senarios:
I.E. having different PCs/OSs (and possibly different spring versions) using this one single folder.
does the ZK lobby recognize the springdata= line?
I remember it ignored the spring folder altogether with 'springdata= '
(which is why I stopped using it, was not aware of the springdata= line at that point)
