I've always found the best form of exercise is martial arts.
You can train almost anywhere, it stimulates the mind as well as the body, it's well balanced exercise and best of all you can beat up anyone who calls you puny.

Both good choices.Wombat wrote:totally football. ive lost around 15 kilos in 1 summer when i was chubby kid ^^ good times, could do things that make me crap my pants nowSpliFF wrote:I've always found the best form of exercise is martial arts.
IMO, if you want to get fit and stay healthy, practicing some kind of regular full body exercise with a discipline component can work miracles. Martial arts is easier to get into than football if you're an adult, though.
If you can stick to a body conditioning regimen, then you reap a lot of similar benefits, plus a nice physique. I think that working out gym-style and doing something like martial arts or a rigorous sport form a neat venn diagram of benefits.

From my experience (Tae Kwon Do), martial arts are really good, but they don't generally physically stress you the way a workout at the gym does, or a 5 mile run does. Now, if part of your martial arts training is doing that stuff anyways (as it is for many mixed martial artists), then the problem goes away.SpliFF wrote:I've always found the best form of exercise is martial arts.

Professional martial artists don't just do a billion reps of punches and expect to get strong from it, there are intensive strength and conditioning programs for martial artists too.
Not to say martial arts is bad, I love TKD, it's just one more reason to take the other types of workout more seriously though, not the majority of the workout itself.

Pushups is training more muscles than pushing up the weight in the gym.SwiftSpear wrote:
If you only train one part of your body (and that's all a single exercise like pushups is doing for you) you're setting yourself up for injuries down the road. I've seen it a hundred times.
Its the whole back and also stomach muscles.

[edit] and ya, honestly, when I work out I avoid weight training with the exception of dead lift and squats. I do pushups, chinup/pullups, situps, jumps, and lunges. Machines especially are terrible for focusing on one muscle. Makes them easy to use, but hard to see real gains with.

worst thing is he would pwn us all...

Re: one hundred push ups :)
aint that a girl?
3x6 pushups daily with increased resistance based on your strength (i.e. one or two legs elevated, one handed, etc.) accomplishes more than 100 straigth pushups.. this will only tire the muscles

push ups only... will just hurt your body. sure it's a nice goal, but it is too limited in specific muscles and usually leads to injury.

His parents were bodybuilders. His dad lost custody when they split, he stayed with mom and leveled off a bit, but he was still a little bodybuilder and used that to get some videos and whatnot made. Everyone was pretty sure that the nutritional supplements daddy was feeding him included steroids, although there was never any proof.

Its gross what some parents do to there kids- and you cant stop them, until the deal full damage.
Now son, about those cybernetic implants you are gonna get, they┬┤ll make you cool, like the terminator - all you have to do is stop growing, because that metall is not gonna bend. Son, im disajoint.

Martial arts are a good exercise, but I agree with Swiftspear, you should probably do some other conditioning stuff along with it. When taking TKD, I learned a lot of awesome stuff, but if I hadn't been into jogging and gymnastics beforehand and still while practiced that while doing martial arts as well, I don't think that I would have exercised the same muscle groups in the same way nor would I have been able to do acrobatics. Being naturally flexible only goes so far and even people with a lot of natural flexibility have to do stretching and conditioning exercises.
I definitely agree that martial arts can be good for helping you learn how to focus and like the mental aspect of it even though I don't like the idea of running around and beating people up. I know that that kind of thing is more common for guys, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, especially since I don't want to hurt anyone.
