Cooperative games vary greatly in difficulty, but in general I tend to prefer cooperative or mixed titles to pure competitive. Less hacking, more social interaction, and there can be a similar difficulty curve.
I'm going to try to download it tonight. According to their site, it isn't ready for Mac yet.

I didn't get UT2K4 until after I purchased Killing Floor, disturbing as that may be. I'm unlikely to play Alien Swarm on UT2K4 if I can play the full Steam version, but if I'm free and you invite me, I think that might still be fun.zwzsg wrote:No really, it pisses me that you're so hyped for an unreleased game while I never managed to motivate anyone to play the still awesome Alien Swarm as a UT2K4 TC with me.

No reason why coop games can't be competitive too, like l4d.Neddie wrote:Cooperative games vary greatly in difficulty, but in general I tend to prefer cooperative or mixed titles to pure competitive. Less hacking, more social interaction, and there can be a similar difficulty curve.
Re: Alien Swarm: Infested finally getting released!
Hence my reference to "mixed" titles. Cooperative competitive, as I've mentioned before on the forums.

Sad about servers busy... gonna stay up late to install... not that it's likely to run too good on my mother-in-law's computer.
edit: installing now... see how it works in the morning.

I played alot more than 30 minutes, but I must admit the gameplay didn't stick to me quite like competitive gaming does.Machete234 wrote:pffhh l4d is fun for about 30min because it gets boring killing mindles zombies.

I found infested vs humans really imbalanced... I dunno, it just wasn't like the stuff I was used to.Hobo Joe wrote:SwiftSpear wrote:I played alot more than 30 minutes, but I must admit the gameplay didn't stick to me quite like competitive gaming does.Machete234 wrote:pffhh l4d is fun for about 30min because it gets boring killing mindles zombies.

Yeah understandable, but for comp play there was a mod that took things away from the survivors like medkits and T2 guns.
Re: Alien Swarm: Infested finally getting released!
Only played offline/practice so far since I don't want to make an ass of myself online (a good thing too, the hacking confused me at first).
Seems pretty solid. The class/level system is neat. After playing for probably about 8 hours last night (yeah...), I'm starting to wonder what the benefit of the commander class is. Commanders are supposed to boost the effectiveness of nearby teammates, but I find that a second heavy weapons guy with a gatling gun and ammo crates as secondary is much more useful.
That's only a minor thing though, and like I said I haven't gone online yet so maybe it's just something I'll learn about later. Seems like a very solid game, I think I'd definitely be willing to pay... maybe $19.99 or so for it in its current state, assuming there are lots of maps.
Considering it was developed to be a free mod, it's very impressive. What I'd really like to see (maybe it's already there?) is a multiplayer mode with a fifth player who controls alien spawning. Sort of like that mod called "Zombie Master" but moar ossumer and with an excuse so maybe my youngish nephew's parents wouldn't look an it as so much of a "killing game". Going a bit off track, I'm tired....
Hey does this have LAN with AI teammates to fill in the unoccupied slots? Coming from valve, with their experience in AI teammates from L4D, L4D2, TF2, CS, etc, I'm hoping it's a safe bet. I wish there were more offline maps though, it's pretty solid even in single player mode.

The thing that really bothered me was how some teams would get a horrendous tank timing and placement, and others would get a creamy beautiful one. Valve really didn't put enough time into balancing the competitive aspect I felt.Hobo Joe wrote:SwiftSpear wrote: I found infested vs humans really imbalanced... You played with bots for 8 hours? How the fuck. I've barely played 8 hours and I've already beaten it like 5 times. The whole point is to play with friends. Playing offline sounds really boring.Caydr wrote:Only played offline/practice so far since I don't want to make an ass of myself online (a good thing too, the hacking confused me at first).

Yeah, it fixed that too. It made it so that tank and witch spawns would be equal, pill spawns would be equal, no kits, no T2, less pills, less throwables, faster infected respawn, fix for tank prelights, etc. All the most glaring problems. There were still a lot of problems though, sadly. Ones that couldn't be fixed with a simple config, which is why I don't play it anymore.SwiftSpear wrote:The thing that really bothered me was how some teams would get a horrendous tank timing and placement, and others would get a creamy beautiful one. Re: Alien Swarm: Infested finally getting released!
ahh... I just didn't want to be one of "those" guys that has absolutely no idea what is going on or what they're supposed to do. So I basically experimented with all the starting weapons and items and classes.
All I can say I'm genuinely saddened by with this game is that they didn't rip off the pulse rifle sound effects from Aliens

2 medics is better than 2 SP Weapons. Especially for the last level.

Looks like I wasn't the only one who had that thought about pulse rifles:

He also modded the motion scanner sound effect!

Re: Alien Swarm: Infested finally getting released!
As expected it didn't perform very well on my Motherinlaw's computer... couldn't run at a higher then 720x480 resolution and when I got near the end of the first level where stuff happens the thing lagged out real bad.
Re: Alien Swarm: Infested finally getting released!
Seems too easy, even on insane difficulty.
