PAYG is obviously different in the US, as it is extremely cost-effective for me. I've never been on contract and don't wish to be.

There are non-contract companies. I myself am with cricket. I have no contract and unlimited (calls/text/web/picturemails/etc) everything for 60 bucks a month.

There is also boost mobile and a few other non contract companies.

Pay as you go has always been much more popular in europe than the US, as are picture messages/MMS, the allure of contracts over here is mainly in the heavily subsidised phones that come with the contracts
