The ram is ok-ish (Get OCZ if possible), but the HD is epic fail, sub it for a western digital.

Edit: I'm not super thrilled with the msi board, but tbh, msi makes quality shit, so I'm sure it'll be fine.

Okay everything is more or less finalized, I figured out that I screwed up on the price of the case/processor combo, and I found a cheaper and far superior combo anyway. Although its 80 dollars more than what I thought the previous combo was (but really its 20 dollars less)

Anyway now I need to cut back. Where can I cut back on price while retaining most of the quality/performance here? (See first post for build)

I got a Gigabyte at the moment (and for over 3 years). It had problems since the first minute. But my board wasnt broken, they all had the problems cause it was a 1.0-revision.
They refused to exchange it to a working mainboard but said I should send it in. I would had to disassemble the complete machine leaving me with a dissambled computer for about two weeks (they called that "premium support", lol). They wanted to hand-solder some parts to the mainboard (wow, scary). But I did not want them to screw around with it cause they said they cannot guarantee that it would clock to the same frequencies as before (again lol, its an overclocking-mainboard).
Last but not least, last week another part got broken and since then I have to reboot three times a day to have a working ethernet-port.

Of course that doesnt mean Gigabyte is bad or produces only crap... it just means... I wont buy Gigabyte again in the next few years and wont recommend them to anyone anymore...

I have no problem getting a broken piece of hardware (can happen anytime), sending it back and getting a working one. But leaving customers with a broken-by-design mainboard and calling it "premium support" is a bit... erm... annoying...

Isn't it kind of a dead-end to save money by DIY-building? Any cash you save on parts is going to get swallowed up by the operating system, isn't it? Buy a Dell and a low-power video board if you want something cheapish.

Only if you're going to run Windows. If you're going for a cheap computer, then you're probably not planning to play modern games, edit video, futz around in Solidworks, or do anything else which might compel you to purchase a commercial operating system.

Also, he can get extremely cheap copies of Windows if necessary because he is a student in a related field, and his university is probably a member of the MSDN Academic Alliance.

Graphics Card: This is your largest expenditure. I know you consider yourself a power user, but a much better price for power point should be this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product - after rebates it will be under fifty dollars, so you'll save enough money to ostensibly upgrade in six months.

Power Supply: You don't need 750, and modular is better than static for somebody who will upgrade components when the financial climate changes. I would go down to the HX520 or HX620. I have an HX620 in each of my desktops.

... Why would you actually pay for windows? Tbh I'm surprised that it's still sold.

What are you saying? You had an insufficient quantity of problems meaning it worked very well? Or you had issues with insufficient power which means it sucked?

Anyway I pretty much bought one of the best 750w psus out there. Its modular, and supposedly the quietest in the world. And its seasonic :)

Cant wait to hook it up to my fans and leds on my case lol. Meanwhile I will try to obtain a mobo. As I am going over budget, and I just had to pay a rather expensive phone bill (woops) I may hold off on the graphics card for a few weeks, but go ahead and buy everything else.

Okay i bought the mobo as well. Really nice one too.

I am about the buy the processor, and I am debating whether 100usd is worth it for the .4 extra ghz from the 1095. Wait a minute, putting that in writing has made me realize that no its not. stupid tribulex....

I don't think the 1055t has an unlocked multiplier (it's not Black Edition?) so you won't get such nice overclocks from it. my best phenom overclocks have been using the multiplier.
