i would like to see follow widgets as a version with unit selectable code.
(only the Units I select get the widget) :

Auto Skirm/Swarm/Repair
Immobile Builders
Improved MetalMakers
Smart Nanos
Unit Mover
Sounds good but if you had all those with unit selectable code you'd probably have to have some UI feature for all such widgets like the one we had with the helper AIs.
There are already so many commands and all sorts of UI buttons and features that adding more...well i guess for very experienced players, that feel comfortable with all the commands and the UI,it could be useful.
As a mod dev I wouldn't want players to have to divert so much attention on trying to figure out the UI just to get the max out of their army.
The whole Lua advantage experienced players have is kinda lame IMO.
Players are asked to not only control the game and balance they are also forced to follow widget development.
I wonder really how hard would it be to localize lua usage for every mod/game making only the game devs to have to follow widget development and would the players themselves be satisfied with game makers deciding which widgets will be used in their mod(based on player demand I assume).

Yet when I argued that games and mods should be able to completely lock out external widgets I was raged at.

yes, it will give an adv user an unfair advantage. yes, I think that is lame.

By widget writers, mainly. Most game/mod devs would agree with you. (I certainly do)
