Yeah, I'd stumbled over your thread here a while I was looking to see if anyones done this yet - meant to give you a shout but forgot, so it's good to see you found it yourself :P.
What you're suggesting is exactly how I'm plan on using it - though I think with an angled view, you might need to use an even larger border (though I'm not too familiar with heightmap pixels).
I don't have an answer to your typemap - aircraft question, other than the standard "Lua" :D.
