Otherwise I would be using a Phenom 2 right now probably, just due to price:performance.
That aside, why do you recommend Nvidia over ATI? I have used a 4870 and a 4890 for the last couple of years without issue. More recently I've been playing Spring a fair bit as well, no problems there either. TBH I think there's just a lot of misconceptions... ATI is doing very well right now, the merger with AMD has finally started to pay off.
Don't make him blow up his new computer... Granted, it's not really hard to build the PC and make it turn on. To get the best performance you need to know a lot more. And if you have even more knowledge, you can get identical or similar performance for much less money.
