Even worse than this, imo, is text drawn by lua, its also streched. Been calling attention to this bug for more than a year now, to no avail :(

True, though it is rather uncommon for notebooks these days, to have this feature, and it is had to find a non-widescreen ther too, plus they cost more.

I'm in favour of trepans script with the default only going as high as the image native res, scaling down for smaller screens while maintaining ratio, centering and black bars for larger screens. Load stats at bottom using white font with black outline so if the image fills that space it is still legible. The default script should also read in gamedata/loadtips.lua and randomly pick a string from the returned table to render at the top.

I have a 2560x1600 screen (10:4) and higher resolutions come along all the time so even maintaining the ratio on stretch won't make an 800x600 stretched jpeg/dds look good.

hmm...
i agree that it would be good to have load screens available in a very high resolution, but most of them are mad of spring screenshots, and you can not await all mod devs to have high resolutions, so an option to make screenshots in higher resolution then the game screen would be good... though it is not important.

I don't think any limits should be hardcoded but in my opinion any loadscreen larger than 1280x1024 is just wasting load time and bandwidth.

+9001 for trepan's idea. that way you can use GL to scale the image however you like, or do custom rendering of whatever you like.
