Sorry, your movies have not been very good so I have been only halfway listening when you were on the news.

You could use Ustream.tv to stream a game live, using something like Camtasia's capture driver to screencap your screen and have it show up as a "webcam".

on the topic of streaming live, this might be a good way to draw in more community members... post on some forums (other than this one) about the date/time of the broadcast, and have a page on this site streaming the video... get the players on TS afterwards with the replay to get their thoughts and commentary... after the fact, youtube the videos...

might show some other communities that the pro battles of spring are both fierce and legitimately skilled, as well as a lot of fun... it would also allow many existing community members to spec "important" games and catch up with who beat who and who is the best etc.

this may also get more players interested in playing competitively, a tournament where the final is broadcast live and archived later for the world to watch would be viagra to the winners e-peen.

ON the topic of replays.
It should be possible to throw a link to areplay in main through some bot and when someone presses it it immedietly launches the game for him without theneed to manually downlaod it save it that go open and watch it.

This is possible, just host the replay and no one has to download anything, they just join your game. Perhaps springie can do this for you, I'm not sure.

Hmmm, interesting, what about a springie replay bot. If there was a lua widget that played a synchronized sound file this would be very useful to noobs.

TA based mods, I'm thinking BA but there are others, are incredibly deep in terms of strategy and tactics, there's TONNES of content for commentators to talk through during your average match.

I'm in complete agreement with KaiserJ, this kind of thing could be an AWESOME promotional tool for spring.

It's funny that this has come about really, me Sefidel and a few others were thinking of starting a radio show or a live feed about spring.

When it comes down to making these commentated replays it will be easy, if a game is full I usually spectatate anyway and comment to the rest of teamspeak what's going on, if you've ever been in the same room as most of us in teamspeak we are loud, enthusiastic speakers, and not to bash the other attempts in any way but the tone of voice and level of volume that some of you guys have recorded at are a bit dull.

We could set aside someone to record the commentating on teamspeak, or i could do it myself, match them up with the right replay and we could start getting a lot of vids done.

The only problem is getting people to watch these videos, because it takes money to market them on websites and youtube is hardly a great way for lots of views.

ill watch them =D
the thing is replays with commentaries could be really beneficial to ppl who watch them and if this becomes something that happens alot, maybe spring's site can host them
a separate little section of the website would benefit ppl who actually care about spring

We are starting to get a small community of commentators, and this could take off pretty damn quick.

We need to start recording soon, and turning replays into videos.

Everyone I've talked to think this is a awesome idea!

I think we need a none UK or American player to balance the commentating, due to the amount of Europeans that play this game.

The biggest issue as I see it, is that prerecorded commentated games will only go so far, we really need the ability to feed live to take it to the next level.

It's not impossible, but from chatting with people we need a machine with a good upload rate and the ability to both run a spring game and transcode video at the same time, as well as some sort of system to manage commentary with multiple people over something like teamspeak or ventrillo (probably the easier part). Either that or we need someone to write a plugin that can do some of that stuff and send the information directly to another machine that is doing the other stuff (like HLTV)

Anyways, in the mean time, start collecting really good games. It's relatively easy to just record the audio over ventrillo/teamspeak while people watch a game together and chat about it. Then just compile the two and transcode a video.

We did some test commentating last night over teamspeak and we were getting to know each other and to know audioble cues when to talk without trying to inturrupt each other.

So far i think creating videos of old replays or live games would be better than having a live feed. This is because of many reasons, many of which we disscused last night, (i actualy wish that we recorded last night because some good ideas and opinions were shared about spring).

I mainly see this as:
1) a great free marketing idea that with the help of spring we could upload these videos to both the spring website and youtube.

With youtube in mind we could ask that players simply click the video link to get views, to subscribe to the channel and to favourite and forward the video on. I know this is classed as youtube cheating but simply, the more views and subs we get then more likely people will see the videos.

2) This is a great way for the spring community to learn from replays. Now its a known fact that people learn from replays, but how many actualy watch them? I've been playing spring for about 3-4 years and from a few replays I learnt alot others could too.

As regards to the live feed, I've got information that theres a flash app in the works that will allow either replays to be shown on a web page, or with a little help a live feed.

I understand live feeds are the best form of commentated videos but, if we have no one to watch them, whats the point in setting it up yet.

I think commentated replays to start with are a sound idea, and until the community knows about it and the outside world live feeds should come second.

I'll try recording a few videos tonight if everyones online tonight!

In terms of live feed, it's the necessary progression.

Live commented feeds let you create massive interest in your competitive scene that otherwise wouldn't exist at all.

Like you say, right now it wouldn't do alot of good since there'd be no one to listen to it.

Basically like watching a sport live on TV while hearing the commentators talk about what is going on. But where people can log into SpringWatcher (That's just a madeup name) and watch a spring game in progress with the commentators talking over it.

This is the first test video we've made, its a lot better when you download.

The resolution is pretty low because of the screen capture program we are using. open source camstudio as recommended by brain damage

If anyone would want to become a pirate for a day and get me a better screen capture program id be greatfull. (cough, FRAPS)

I'd advise downloading this video because of the resolution, its our first video and we are working on many others at the moment.

If anyone wants to join please dont be afraid to ask, just join CA teamspeak and look for my tag.

EDIT: this google videos is really annoying, the quality is so low once you upload it.

Ill make a spring youtube account, and upload it there

It took me 1h to dl this fucker :\

I think you guys did excellent job commentating, altho I fell like you should be more realistic about how you were evaluating players moves, because in the end this was just a random, public mix, dsd game. It sounded kinda silly to me when you talked how one team used different starting tactics and how they planed shit. I just don't feel any team spirit in games like that and I don't think teamplay could be evaluated at all. So what I'm trying to say that ur commentating would be amazing for a game of higher skill level, where players actually bother to discuss tax and teamwork.

Kudos for interesting info tho. I was able to watch whole video without getting bored. I rarely felt like I wanted to see something else that's been shown, which makes me actually want to watch more of your videos over replays because I can just sit back, relax and listen to intriguing viewpoints from multiple commentators. You even talked about psychological effects, tunnel vision, personal tactics models etc! I would definitely want to listen to you guys live on some other games.

So start commentating high level games, if you ask me you two are completely up to it. I would probably agree with all of the things you're saying then and trust me, you would have alot more to talk about.

It would be fairly interesting for me to see some players I know rly good or myself on commented replay, because I could hear opinions on players decisions and learn from that. I tend to do things using my instinct instead of overthinking them so I just take other players moves for granted also. I don't see any depth behind everything and that's where commentators come in.

Keep up the good work imho.

About video quality: I would defintely want to know which color is which player and read their names above commander. But that only applies to downloadable movies. I know you can't stream at sucha high quality.

I already wrote once how Wolfenstein:ET does live feed, which is very good method in my opinion. You tune in to voice only stream while you're ingame spectating. You can lock to commentator's camera so you're in sync with his view. Actual game only has shout casters and hubs as specs while others can join on dedicated spectating servers. Spectating servers are usually delayed to prevent abuse.

p.s. Turn off fucking TS sounds.
