Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
That looks really spiffy, very nice work. I'm happy to fill in the S44 stuff a bit and generally help out.
One note - the images from some of the mod/game pages stretch beyond the page borders. I can resize the one from Dark Side and fix it if you like.

Yeah, this looks like a very helpful site, and I'm glad someone went and did it rather then continuing to discuss it in a comittee.
I do agree though, that if/when the new site is actually up and running, it would be potentially counter-productive to have these two sites running at the same time, and some sort of merger would be excellent.

Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
Warlord, Please read my posts on the subject and then re-address. Springinfo is to work alongside Spring site, not against. The formatting is such that information can be easily copy pasted from one to the other.
@nemo, and warlord and everyone else (content devs, mappers, lua guys, etc etc)
Please go to http://www.springinfo.info and register with your name here, at which point I'll put you in the appropriate category so you can change your stuff and so on.
Some bastard parked spring.info before I had a chance to register it, so the official site url is http://www.springinfo.info

Don't use whatever domain search tool you were using, just who.is to check if it's free and then register it. Many domain search sites will register domains people search for in order to make money through their sale.Forboding Angel wrote:Some bastard parked spring.info before I had a chance to register it, so the official site url is http://www.springinfo.info

Well see, I was trying to park it myself. Then found that it belongs to a reseller which I prefer not to mess with cause they like to hike rates.
Oh btw, site is down for a little bit till dns decides to propagate.

Individual posts should be boxed in some way visually, adding to the solidarity of a post.

They are neddie. Just atm there is only one post on there.
Along with time/datestamps and who made the post.
Will be a little bit folks. I had to move it's location and am still having to dick around with dns.

Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
I don't see any visible divisions, but perhaps the revised site is not accessible yet from my location.

If there is only 1 post, how would you see the division?Forboding Angel wrote:They are neddie. Just atm there is only one post on there.
Also, what you are looking at is your browser cache, considering the site isn't even at that location on the server anymore.
As I said, DNS is being extraordinarily dumb atm.
Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
Yeah, definitely.
Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
Is it the dns? I can log in with ssh but the site is nonresponsive.

Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
Well, my point was more that this is great functionality which, imo, it'd be worth integrating it into the main site rather then having it as a peripheral. In other areas, information that is effectively shown on your site could be duplicated with information on the original website (mod info pages, etc). So to me, it would make sense for this and the spring site to be essentially the same thing.
But, this has already been addressed to an extent in this thread.
Getting a 404 on those links.

Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
Edit: I'm sorry warlord, I think I spoke out of turn on that one, however, the whole point is for the sites to compliment each other. You seem to be having a hard time understanding this. Springinfo is only for the players, and only for content devs to show of their stuff in a place where new and old users alike will easily see it. A place to send Newbs before they get cussed out in games. A place where a player can find the latest spring news without dredging the forums. The target audience is very specific. If you are a content dev, or an engine developer, springinfo prolly isn't perfectly tailored to your needs whereas the spring site is a great place (or will be) for all that other information. Additionally, as a new user you will be able to get the springinfo content from the spring site, but with it all mixed in the way it's bound to be, a player is better off on springinfo.
The goal is not to supplant, but to suppliment.
/edit
Lurker, SSH and FTP both agree that I'm not crazy as I've been double checking on both all afternoon. SO I restored it back to the way it was before I bought the domain, deleted the hosting reference for springinfo.info, edited the database thru phpmyadmin to point to the correct location, changed the config so that it points to the correct mysql database, and now all it wants to do is redirect in circles between evolutionrts.info and springinfo.info.
TL;DR Dreamhost is for the moment, fucked. Or at least my account is. If their goddamn dns worked properly instead of crapping all over itself I wouldn't be in this mess. Thankfully, before I left work today I backed up[ the site, and shortly after I got home I backed up the mysql database, so if all goes to shit, I'm in pretty decent shape.

Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
It's definitely their DNS.
Everything else works perfectly unless you try to use index.php or just go to the actual directory. Ungh, what a mess of fail.

Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
FIXED! *YAY*
After a significant amount of trouble, I was able to get DNS to propagate correctly (instead of the circular redirect that was going on). Dreamhost really screwed the pooch on that one, but no matter. It is all fixed, up and running, and ready to go!
I'm sorry, one thing that i lost and could not recover was users and password. Could you guys please register again? Thanks!
http://springinfo.info is the addy, just to make it totally clear

*shrugs*
If that's all you want, then that's fine. I just thought it was functionality that would be excellent directly integrated into the spring website. I'm not saying that the Spring info page should be the frontpage, just that it's functionality could be implemented quite effectively into link pages. But I do see what you're trying to do with the portal for new players. I guess in my opinion, many things you are trying to achieve with springinfo are also things that ought to be achieved with the spring website, so it makes sense to make them one and the same. Noobs are going to arrive and it'd be brilliant if, instead of say, looking at a generic IW preview page that we have to update (as is planned for the new website), they go straight to your springinfo style page which we are updating anyway (that is, our mod summary page and the springinfo page are one and the same - but formatted to suit the spring website so that it falls under that 'umbrella').
I mean, presuming we have a generic mod summary page on the spring website, that leads back to our personal website, which contains all of the detailed information on our mod, where does springinfo sit in that user loop?
Also, that is NOT the addy

Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
I've said it before, and I do not know how to make it any clearer. It is simple truth that the main spring site will never be awesome for players. Adequate, but not much more.
THere is too much info to crawl through for a new user. The spring site tries to serve Engine Devs, Content Devs, and Players. Any wild guesses as to what it is the worst at?
SpringInfo is devoted to the playerbase, therefore it can be VERY good at that purpose.
THe purpose of modpages is NOT to update them every single day... YOu could, but I dunno what the point would be. THey are just an advertising outlet to lead an interested user to your website.
News posts are where it's really at. Post your juicy stuff there and it will get seen.
Course, people could just sit back and whine, which is pretty much par for the course for some people around here.

Re: SpringInfo "Player Portal"
Font size on that site is way, way too small and needs to be bumped up a few notches.
