I side with smoth here on this one. Microsofts "user' directories are fucking retarded and ruin if anything, a sense of self one has with their own pc. I don't know about you, but the only ppl who understand my harddrive's organization is me. And i like to keep it that way.

I get sooooo pissed when a game insists on putting its shit in the "my documents" folder. I like to keep that shit empty thank-you-very-much.

Apparently they thought that the partition where your user directory is on is huge like their xbox. I've got a 5 GB parition for win2k and 3 GB are well spent in service packs and lots of unecessary DLLs.

I still remember some apps which could only be installed to the C drive.

Ah so you would want a config that doesnt reference my documents then.

You all seem to forget that what I'm suggesting is not goign to prevent you carrying on as you are now. What I am suggesting should help users. Its not forcing users to use my documents, its giving them the choice to put mods and maps wherever they want. Theres nothing stopping you just putting stuff in the spring folder and deleting any folders in my docs that you dont want.

Its like the

"I put my tins in the cupboard but I'm going to protest and picket outside a shop that sells a special tin holder to hang on your wall even though I can simply choose not to use it I'm gonna whine and complain anyway because I personally dont want to use a tin holder and would prefer to keep it how it is, it doesnt matter that I can just ignore it and carry on as I have been, or that there are people who for xyz reasons cant use cupboards for tins, I demand that I am going to use the cupboard so everybody else must use the cupboard and my only justification for forcing everyone to use the cupboard is that I like using the cupboard"

Your all arguing against something you dont like despite there being a choice not to use it if you dont want to.

So what if you dont want to burn maps and content to DVDs, perhaps there's someone else who does, perhaps theres someone who runs regular LAN parties and has several GB of maps on a network share? Or somebody who doesnt want to have 5 dev folders with 4GB of maps, aka 5*4 = 20GB of maps with 5x duplication, who wants to store all their maps and mdos in one folder and not have to install a map or mod 5 times.

Oh sorry, a group fo people who can choose not to bother with this system are deciding there shouldnt be a chocie to begin with and you should all be forced to use 1 single directory even if you dont want to, even if its a major inconvenience, even if the entire setup has already been implemented for linux people.

Remember when SJ made the dynamic water renderer? Why werent you all protesting? Afterall you specifically cant run dynamic water, I know smoth cant run dynamic water he posted an entire thread about it and yet I dont remember seeing him complaining and saying it should be removed...

Really, I fail to see why you are so against a system that is 'optional'. A system that can prevent many inconveniences, and let you choose where you want spring to put its files.

because af, I wanted to request the configuration be stored in in a way that is easily accessed and you are turning it into an argument about them adding some other thing to allow people to redirect the place spring looks to for it's files.

I was just asking about a way to store my spring settings, it is now a discussion about how AF wants to be able to redirect spring's file structure. Not what I started this thread for.

Either way, someone has to add all of those options and as a person working on a project.. it will become hard for me to explain to the users who rearranged where spring points for stuff to unload the project they downloaded. Believe me people will. As far as others pulling the maps and mods off of the network to use at run time, I can only assume you have never been to a lan. I once let 2 people run a game from my machine and i have a pretty good machine... it lagged like hell and slowed me down in a major way.

You're out of your element, AF! 8)

So how difficult/time consuming would it be to allow spring to load the settings from an ini file? There are premade classes to access ini files (or some other fileformat like XML) so this is should not be an issue.

Not very difficult, that's what the Linux build already does. The point is more that the locations intended to save user-specific settings-files in are not unified across Windows versions, and that tasclient/settings.exe/any other tool expecting to find stuff in the registry would need to be patched as well.
