rivots are inferior to a solid weld. most of that stuff looks like the armored suits in the league of extra ordinary gentlemen. In a world where we have resurrection, capture, reclamation, and creation of machines via nano that sort of unit is out of place.

I agree with smoth - for you current scenario that rivet design is a bit out of place. But damn - that Outlaw reminds me of something that looks extremely similar but I can't remember where I know this "medieval helmet design" and all for a robot... :?

And I think I don't have to say that the flying bomb is the best of them all...

I really like the corcom concept just not the rivets.

the outlaw reminds me of a cross between a killer Kan and a spacemarine dreadnaught

Ironic, given that at least a few Killer Kans probably once were Dreadnoughts

How can a model be OTA based but IP free? It's either a derivative work or it isn't.

Also... EXTERMINATE!

It looks a bit better.
Your just jealous that he can butcher OTA, and you cant.

Who's to say they're using weldable metal for external armor plates? Maybe it's some weird hypertough alloy that can only be made in flat sheets and is nearly impossible to weld or otherwise bind, so they use holes and bolts instead?

Besides, it's a game about giant robots. Realism is pointless, the question is "does it look good".

And my answer: less rivets. But make them bigger.

rivots do not look good, they look late industrial to early modern. They only look good in a steampunk setting. Odds are the core/arm units have no welds or rivets but are instead a solid and cohesive plate as it is formed from nanomachines. The armor would be seamless and perfect.

Yes, I knew I had a prejudice against rivets. Smoth just vocalised it. Nanospray = no rivets.

Rivets look sort of silly anyway. You won't need them.

Well, I just think that, once you introduce accepting nanospray, that any kind of "heavy metal" look becomes pretty hard to do, since Nanospray means that the models could have any curved, convoluted, detailed form. If you want something dark, the best result would be Gigeresque, but any kind of heavy-metal/steampunk look becomes absurd if you assume nanorobot fabrication.

And wasn't the idea to divorce from OTA themes like nanospray?

Also, given the size of the mechs, those would have to be some pretty big rivets

Hmm, suppose.

I've always thought of arm as quite gracile in form, so the spherebot is a good direction.

Core are the opposite, with robust, utilitarian lines emphasising strength and power. I don't think a major redesign is really necessary, altering arm to the spherebot fashion and just updating core (as Mr. D has started to do) would differentiate them sufficiently.

On the other hand, I'd love to see a race of hulking steampunk robots, long abandoned by their makers in orbit around a lonely star but animated by the chaotic, living energy released from that star's death.

Also, a race of gothic machines, perhaps an arm or core scouting party which touched upon the wrong world, their patterns and blueprints corrupted by vengeful souls of the dead, would be rather nice.

I think that both sides dont have to nessasarily maintain a single theme throught the entire tech tree.
I think it would be nice if each side could have 2 or maybe even mroe themes ot them.. like core kbots can look a bit different not exactly the same style as vehicles or maybe only some of them..so you get 2 styles intermingled with some kbots and vehicles maintain one theme and some another.

I think If the models and textures are all of a similair quality there dosnt have to be a strongly accentuated theme and it can look like its a patch work of say "a few different manufacturing technics at different times" etc...
A single strongly accentuated theme can get boring real fast IMO.
Especially in a game that is similair to ota, with only 1-2 sides ot fight with that have a big amount of units.

Here's a model I made today:

Of course there are some flaws in this model. The honeycomb style missile holder could easily be made with some texturing instead of modelling. But I am still happy with it, as it is much better than my previous models.

[EDIT] Slight update, I moved the pivot point.
