I wanted to do something similiar too with a bunch of friends - 3D space battle game with modular ships, where modules would take damage and even break off the ship. I don't quite have the skills yet, though.

Picasso's is Starship Troopers terran ascendancy or something like that. Played it 10 years ago.

Dominions 3, a game that swallowed so much of me and my friends time when we first got it.
