Discuss the source code and development of Spring Engine in general from a technical point of view. Patches go here too.

Yes, something to set the default speed and then an accelerator key would both be useful. And (if it's not asking too much) it would be nice to have a different scrolling speed setting for each camera view. For example, one of the reasons why I never use the Total War camera view is that it scrolls awfully slow compared to the other views.

An idea that just popped up in my head: why not a key that you can hold to temporarily get a different camera view? That would make playing in FPS mode much easier: just hold right alt or whatever, and the camera switches to top-down to allow you to select units and give move orders easier; the camera switches back to the precedent mode whenever you release the key.

I find that pressing c once then pressing it again usually does that, though maybe it should b changed so holding down does exactly what you said.

Haha and they call me impatient :P

why dont we make an attempt to do it our selves it sounds like something we really need for the new mods and stuff .... and face it the one we have nows a peace of shit but serves its purpose for now.

Raar. Checking back in after a long hiatus... guys, I've been swamped with this being my senior year of college. I have not forgotten this project, and will be getting back to work on the new gui asap. my main problem has been my awful job hours, which take away any desire to do extra programming work, not to mention the ACM programming competition which finally happened last weekend, where my team finished 2nd and earned a trip to the World Finals in the Spring :) I found a new job for next semester, and my current job ends in less than a month, so expect heavy work to be done soon.

NOTE: my current job is an on-campus job, so no hate mail about msoft to me, please ;)

The whole point of the new GUI is to make a customizable base. If we only make 2 then all mods are stuck with the same 2 old GUI themeplates. What we need is a standard system that any graphics can be imposed on.

IHMO, this is far away from our preocupation.
Let's make the newgui to work and fix the last bug.

Skins are not the important part, I'm sure when the newGui will be finnished, a ton of people will make skins. We need good programmer :(

ok this is what we need to do we need to get all the programers we have and get them to have a look, Zaphod, Alanti, DJ oldfield maybe one of them coud look into and see what they could do since there really skilled progamers that i know of.

If i have missed any please feel free to comment but now where getting to the stage where the GUI is desperatly needed.

so if anyone wonts to step up to the chellenge feel free to do so because it doesnt look like we have any other option :( !!!!

gui crucial

Post by unlucky »

Yeah this replacement gui looks brilliant and kind of completes spring as a finished system. Me and my friend only got spring 2 days ago and despite tons of coursework and maths homework we've stuffed in 6 hours of game playing. Its far to addictive.... but the gui has to be the most important thing to improve it doesn't represent how amazing the game engine itself is, and that game engine is perfect (i just love seeing vulcans fire on a high trahectory  )

I can fix some bugs, add somes windows or little features.
But as Juninkomiko said, the way the input is handled is a bit strange and need to be redesigned.
I just don't have enough skill to redesign such part of the code. ( This is sad, cause I could spend ~2 hours per day for Spring )

Oh, and I need to understand how to compile the linux branch without VS200x.

Noize asked me to look into this a week ago.

So i looked at ti and threw it away. The code si a nightmare fi you dont already know it. I got a headache reading it and trying to piece thgins together. Few of the files ahev comments at all and a lot fo code just doesnt seem obvious enought o piece it all together. There're no explanations as to hwo ti works and the onyl oen I've maanged to get is an expalnation of what the new gui si, not how it works codewise.

If I ahd to work on the New GUI I would delete it and start from scratch on the current GUI. But I dont know OpenGL so I couldnt do that.

Look into cygwin and mingw.

You have to get scons to run on your windows box so that you can build the source.

Perhaps if you wrote a quick run through of the process on the wiki? And something explaining what Scons is...
