I wonder if it's at all possible to make a program that would allow skinning models with the "spraypaint" approach, just spray color over the model, slap 'decals' on it, and save the resulting texturemap. If you think it's impossible, look at Street Legal Redline, the garage there is a very good example of spraypaint model texturing. You just literally select a brush, a color, and just paint anything you like anywhere. Plus you can make custom decals that aren't simply added as an overlay to the model, but instead are directly applied to the texture.
This wouldn't take away the need to UVmap the model yourself, nor would it completely replace the common "create-a-texture-and-fit-the-map-to-it" way of skinning, because certain things would be more difficult to achieve that way, like accurately placing small details.
I'm pretty sure it's very possible to make an app like this for Spring, because even the BlitzBasic environment has a simple model-painting example in the samples section.

Wow, I actually found a freeware program that allows to do what I wanted. It's called Tattoo, written (surprisingly) in Blitz Basic (see I told you BB has that functionality!), and can be found here. It's not exactly a great tool, because it's rather unstable, slow and glitchy sometimes, but it does allow to paint your model with whatever you need. A professional tool of the same kind - Deep Paint 3D - costs around 350$, so Tattoo is the best thing you can get for free. ...legally that is.
edit: Deep Paint 3D is actually a lot more useful... and faster and less buggy to boot. And it can also paint in bump, alpha and shinyness layers at once, and even render the results right away. :D If it didn't cost so much it would be a good tool.
