well, by the looks of it, the waves travel across the water at the same speed regardless of how big or powerful the blast is. so, the spires happen, imo, because the blast has nowhere to go but up. if it could be coded to go outwards, then it would spray over a large area. it also just holds itself together like a giant wave.
when a large blast occurs in real life, a spire is created but it slowly expands. also, its more of an explosion that shoots water into the air and it seperates. the first segments of water travel faster then the rest since they have the most energy exerted on them. as they hit their maximum height, they spread out and rain back down. its similar to how dirt flies up into the air but since it has a different tecture and characteristic, it doesnt act exactly like it.
here's a video showing it better. kinda funny but it still shows how water reacts.

here's another one

as of now, it not perfect but i think the water effects are a great addition. now if only shells fired could cause waves and ships exploding cause bigger waves, it would be a lot more realistic.

The surface should go white and opaque at certain water speeds or something..
The foam texture has too big bubbles, imo there's no way one could see the individual bubbles at spring's scale.
Really awesome that torpedo vid!
Maybe someday spring can be like that. I also bet, sooner or later someone meticulously models a realistic a-bomb too. :)

simply creating a rule where explosions above a certain size spawn a water spray particle effect (using the same system as is currently used for smoke FX on land, but make the spray heavier than smoke so it falls faster), and make an overall limit to wave height.wizard8873 wrote:well, by the looks of it, the waves travel across the water at the same speed regardless of how big or powerful the blast is. so, the spires happen, imo, because the blast has nowhere to go but up. if it could be coded to go outwards, then it would spray over a large area. it also just holds itself together like a giant wave.

That way, explosions above a certain size would make a big splash, but no ridiculous water cones.
It was a replay. I slowed down the speed to 0.100000 and at the right moment I paused the replay and took the screenshot.unpossible wrote:the water doesn't look very dynamic to me
what gamespeed did you put that on?
Spring version was .6x so it did not have dynamic water. My graphic card does not support dynamic water

I submitted the best screenshots of the thread, but it was before that last batch. You can submit the best from that last batch.
I still hope that is what I was supposed to do to get them up.
edit: The stupid forum is screwing up. It said it didn't post successfuly, but it actually did.
Oh well, it'll increase my postcount

Nah, some shots are good to have the hud on, I mean, they're supposed to show what the game is like to people who don't know. It even looks cooler that way in many shots, people are interested about "what's this functionality?" etc.
There's room for two kinds of shots:
1) showing gameplay, usually topdown view, hud and health bars on, some chat etc..
2) "bull" shots, fps view, paused, carefully positioned camera, hud and healths off.

Can any future posts to this thread be done with thumbnails, firefox and Internet explorer both froze for 10 minutes because fo the sheer number of large full colour screens.
More bandwidth was used loading thsi page than was used to laod a thread at darkstars when someone attacked the site posting hudnreds of animated GIF images
