Taking Requests...

Post by LathanStanley »

Ok, I think I got everything aGorm needed done, and I've got a few other projects I'm working on...

But I wouldn't mind helping the rest of you guys out...

If you have an idea, or a feature you need... post it here.. I'll do what I can for ya, it'll be first come, first serve... minus those features that are obviously pointless, or ones I'm allready working on, and those that are waaay too time consuming... the really big, unique to a single map, time consuming features are fun to do and all.... but right now, I'm gonna put priority on realistic stuff, generalized buildings, rocks, trees, plants, spikes, crystal formations, alien stuff, boulders, stuff like that... Feel free to post a request for some super duper fancy smanchy building thing thats only gonna work on the center of your unique map... maybe I'll work on it, at least model it or something... but understand I'm gonna make the majority of mappers happy before the minority...

but PLEASE, post why you need the feature, and some drawings, pictures, sizes you need, something to explain what it is you want...

don't just say, "I WANT MARS ROCKS!"... I'll just ignore you....

if you say something along the lines of:

"I would like some clusters of maroon and orange colored geometrically irregular rocks of irregular shape, sized from 5ft in diameter, to 50ft in diameter... with cracks across them, and 1 or 2 large ones standing up, that look kinda like this:
Image"

or "Can I get some alien type trees and vegitation that would look simillar to Image Preferably in small clusters of 3 or 4 plants in each group. They should be about 5 to 10 feet tall, with the last one at 15 feet."

If you can't find a picture of something simillar to what you want on the internet, DRAW ONE IN PAINT!... lol it dosen't have to be fancy.. but images are alot better to work with than simple words... also, you can edit pictures you find and I'll go from there...

I'm probably over exaggerating on the detail per post on the rocks etc. but I'm doing so to make a point.

If you have something very specific in mind, provide as much information as possible, otherwise, don't plan on it coming out right... I can only guess so well...

I've always liked swamp map concepts. Swamps do alot of merging between jutting landmass narrow paths and sprawling pools. They seem to be the perfect setting for dynamic TA tactical battles.

I think features like these could help out mappers trying to work with the wetworld look.

Swiftspear....

I can generate the models, and texture them...

but those detailed plants are going to KILL the spring engine unless I can use transparencies...

the large trees... I can make HUGE tree trunks, and make them very convincing... nifty, I'll do it.... (been kinda done though, though they were square and pretty, lame?...) :P

swamp trees, maybe I can do a tree with SOLID canopies... like, some sticks protruding down out of a green bubble look... with a buncha leaves spammed all over the top.... but thats not gonna look amazing... not by any means...

but to make them look like the pictures...

each tree would be like 9000 facets without transparencies, can we say computers melting with like 800 of these on the screen.. I mean c'mon thats like, 7,200,000 facets...

but with transparencies approx 80-200 (much more feasiable)...

if I cut LOTS AND LOTS of detail, and used transparencies to the best of my ability, I could see each tree cluster weighing in around 50 or so facets....

but until transparencies work, heavy foliage items such as swamp type "jungle" effects... are gonna be impossible...

I apologize....

The single tree on the mound of dirt, I can prolly do without consuming TOO many facets.... but again, its gonna look pretty terrible without transparencies.... (bubble of green on some sticks)

lily pads are an excellent idea, but when a feature is placed its placed at the terrain height, not the surface of the water height... and well.... if I put them X units above the (underwater) ground... and then the float on the surface of the water properlly... it will work for that height.... but as soon as you move it anywhere to a sloped terrain at a different level, the lilypads will either float mysterously.... or they will be underwater... again... very, very, very hard.... maybe, I can make some lilypads and you mappers can guess how far from the shore to place them, at what depth/slope level... but thats gonna be SSOOOO much of a guess and check, I'd feel sorry for the mappers... just me guessing, but, it'll take approximately 10-20 tries to place 1 set of lilypads properlly... and if you wanna use say, 100 sets of them.... its gonna take thousands of tries to get them right... and you can't just place them on the right "color" on the heightmap.... the featuremap is at a different resolution, and the features get a different size footprint... and on top of that, at that "color" the ground is prolly sloped, and thus it still won't be the "correct" level....

alas, and again, they will need transparencies too...

the grassy things, I think they are called Pomettoes?... are prolly do-able... they are gonna chomp on your cpu though... even with 1 facet stems and 6 facet things on the top, and 4 facet leaves.. apiece....
they will weigh in at like, (guessing) 18 facets each, a cluster of 10, will be 180 facets... thats not TOOO bad, as long as they are used in moderation...

I'll see if I can come up with something...

SYs???

can we get Transparencies?

can we get a "Float on water" key for features??

on another note....

All the rocks I have going right now though, they are first... I can do them with the engine I have to work with...

Trasparentcies are the thing that I'll be primarily lobbying for after lunix development comes to a top. IMO it's a MASSIVE oversight, compared to many of the other features which might be nice to have but aren't literally holding the game back. I don't think there's any other relitively small change that spring could benifit from so much.

[edit] also, don't feel the need to go all out doing features I suggest. I won't be mapping enough to use the features anyways. I'm just excited about these kind of general features being available. I mean so far we have a palm tree and an odd shaped leaf thing as well as some rocks and mappers have been doing things with them that are totally awesome! It's probably best to make the most active projects the ones that are acctually holding back a map at this point in time. Like noize's features.

[edit2] for that green swampscape pic I was trying to pull out the bull rushes... but I couldn't remember what they were called so I couldn't find a better pic on google :P

I'll add it to the list of things to do for now.... but if someone beats me to it, more power to them...

I've got pretty full hands right now...

I CAN do units, just as of right now, I choose not to, I'm trying to get the maps up to speed.... they NEED features...
